Pierre Mornell Obituary

Dr. Pierre William Mornell Passed away peacefully on September 12, 2011. Pierre was a loving father, devoted husband, renowned psychiatrist/author, and consummate listener with an intense curiosity about what others had to say. He is survived by his wife Linda, his brother Gene, his three children Sascha, Sara and Mara, as well as seven grandchildren. Pierre was born on January 22, 1935 in Chicago, IL to Russian immigrants and subsequently raised in Los Angeles. He was class president his senior year in high school, and later attended UCLA, eventually participating in Project India, a cultural exchange program. That experience coupled with military service in Germany set his lifelong interest in other cultures and politics. In 1963 he graduated from medical school at UCSF and began his psychiatric training at Langley Porter where, in 1965, he met his wife to be, Linda (a registered nurse). After moving to Bolinas, CA, he started his practice in Mill Valley while raising his family. His career expanded from marriage counseling to corporate consulting, to noted author. His five books included Passive Men/Wild Women, Thank God It's Monday, and Hiring Smart. In demand as a frequent and popular lecturer at Harvard Business School, Pierre was also sought after by the media and had numerous TV appearances on Good Morning America, Oprah, Dr. Ruth and others. The one word that best describes Pierre is generous. Throughout his life and career, he gave of himself to his family, friends, patients and everyone he came in contact with. The sorrow and magnitude of his premature illness and loss is one that cannot be adequately expressed. He will be especially missed by his family to whom he gave so much and which was his proudest accomplishment. Pierre's life will be celebrated in a service on Sunday, October 16 at 10:00am at Fernwood Funeral Home, 301 Tennessee Valley Road, Mill Valley, CA followed by a luncheon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made in Pierre's name to, "The Trust for Public Land, 101 Montgomery Street, Suite 900, San Francisco, CA 94104".

I still have very fond memories of the entire Mornell Family. As camp director of my summer camp in Santa Cruz the children were a source of great joy to have at camp!. I also fondly remember the day we all spent together in Bolinas. If time allows, it would be wonderful to hear how your family is doing. With great fondness and lasting memories, Jordan Safine

In March of 1998, I read Dr. Pierre's article in Inc. about Hiring Smart. I was looking for a speaker for our leadership training so I e-mailed him. It was the first e-mail he had received about the article and it was the beginning of our friendship. He came to Virginia and spoke to our company, Bovis Lend Lease and taught us lessons in hiring that I have never forgotten. After that, he sent me Christmas cards of your beautiful family. I wish I could have met you all! I could see the love in your eyes in those pictures. I pray that God will comfort you at this difficult time and that you will be uplifted by all the great things that Dr. Pierre did. With sympathy and respect. Ron Deffenbaugh

Linda and Family. The Safine Family (Santa Cruz Sports Camp Director) wishes to express our sincere condolences to you and your wonderful family. All of us have very fond memories of our past relationship, including our visit to your Bolinas Home. We will be there in spirit as we have a long standing College visit for my youngest son. All our very warmest regards, Jordan

Pierre was truly a wonderful and generous man. I got to know him well as colleague and friend when we were both interns at Los Angeles County Hospital pulling all-nighters together on the Medicine Admitting Ward in the early 1960s. Even then he was wonderfully skillful, sensible, mature beyond his years, helpful to all in need of him, wise, kind, broadly informed and interested in the larger world beyond medicine. He has been loved and valued by many over many decades. My best wishes go to his family and friends.

As a graphic designer I had the pleasure of working with Pierre on several of his books. Although he was one of the most left brained individuals I've ever met , his interest in of how right brained (visual) people actually solved problems was akin to finding a new unexplored land with different languages, mores and customs. He had a childlike enthusiasm for new experiences, and always wanted to learn more and discover new things. I'll miss his intellect, his charm and most of all his unbound pursuit of something different. Kit Hinrichs, San Francisco

May you and your family be comforted by the beautiful memories and warmth he has left in you all. In one of his lectures at the College of Marin he amused all present emphasizing the truth of the addage "A good man is hard to find." God certainly found a good man when he welcomed Pierre with his glowing memorable smile to share the beauty and peace in his Kingdom.
