Reginald Burns Obituary

Reginald Â'Regi' Wilbur Burns

Passed away at home in Cloverdale, CA on January 7, 2016, at the age of 61, after a long battle with stomach cancer.
Regi was predeceased by his father, Wilbur Burns, his mother, Mary Ruth Greene and his sister Marie Devon Greene Gill. Regi is survived by his partner of 23 years, husband of 8 years, Michael A. Hoban; his brother Frederick Greene; nieces and nephews, Jackie Robinson Lowe, Cedric Gill, Andrea Gill, Mary L. Green, Annamae Mullen, and Madalaine Mullen; cousins Faye Hauser-Price and Peaches Golding; and by a wide and loving circle of friends and family in California, North Carolina and at UNC.
Regi was born in Winston Salem, North Carolina, on July 15, 1954. he showed great aptitude as early as the third grade, and was selected for a special academic unit for bright children. In 1968 he received a Doris Duke scholarship for high school, and was the first African American student at The Episcopal High School in Virginia at Alexandria. He attended The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was a prestigious Morehead Scholar and Phi Beta Kappa member, graduating in 1976. Regi was an avid Tarheels' basketball fan, one could count on finding him in front of a TV, brackets in hand, for all of March Madness.
Regi moved to The San Francisco Bay Area in 1976, and worked primarily in the airlines industry with United Airlines and Qantas Airlines. He loved to travel, and traveled extensively in Europe and South America. His love of food and cooking is legendary. He was happiest when cooking a gourmet meal for close friends. He worked as a caterer in New Orleans in the mid 1980's, learning Creole and Cajun cooking. He returned to California, living in Los Angeles and then migrating back to San Francisco and his love of food. He became a wonderful Thai chef, studying under Kasma Loha-unchit, where he learned how to make the perfect tom kha gai.
Regi was a long-term HIV survivor, and a role model to many during the years of the AIDS epidemic. He cheerfully struggled against HIV for nearly 30 years, and lost his first partner, Richard Killingsworth, to the epidemic. Regi was extremely active in Democratic politics. He worked with the 1992 Clinton campaign setting up the Northern California Speakers database. And in 1996 he was selected as a delegate to the Democratic Convention, pledged to Bill Clinton. In 2009 Regi and Mike retired to Cloverdale, CA in Northern Sonoma County, where he continued his cooking while Mike gardened. Regi loved tomatoes, and grew the biggest, best tomatoes in Cloverdale. Together Regi and Mike grew and canned fruits and vegetables. Regi's last culinary triumph was perfecting a Cloverdale sourdough starter and bread, which he sold to neighbors and friends in Cloverdale.
A Memorial Celebration will be held at the United Church of Cloverdale, 439 N. Cloverdale Blvd, Cloverdale, CA, at 1:00 PM on February 20, 2016. Please, if you have any stories of Regi, bring them to the celebration. A reception and potluck will follow after in the church fellowship hall.
Memorial donations can be made to Dolores Street Community Services, Richard M. Cohen Residence, online, or at 938 Valencia Street, San Francisco, CA, 94110. Arrangements by Fred Young F. H. Cloverdale, 707-894-2540.

Reggie, I'm so sorry it's taken so long to connect. I was thinking about you tonight and wondering why I've not heard from you in so long and now I know.

I will miss you, but know you are happy in your peaceful garden.

I will miss your sweetness and beautiful smile most. You and Mike were my "rocks" while I waited for Carl to move here after he retired. It meant a lot that you were next door....Thank you for the years of sharing S'Mores on the Fourth with Nigel and thank you for all of your wonderful food treats. You made me laugh each time you called me "Anita"...reminder of a joke between us. May you rest in peace, Dear Heart. Jane and Carl, too, of course

My condolences to Mike and all Reggie's family and friends. It's with a heavy heart that I learned of Reggie's passing. I first met Reggie in 1968 we were both in the second class of Anne C Stouffer Foundation fellows, tasked with integrating southern prep schools. Just two weeks ago in Atlanta, we reunited for the first time in 40 years and some of the stories that we exchanged included Reggie. We'll miss him.

Such a warm giving heart and a sweet man. Always friendly and smiling, concerned about you, no matter what was going on with him. Everyone loved him and he was a true nexus between so many, bringing them together for meals or all us traveling together. He was like a big sweet human glue stick! We had such vacations back in the day, traveling in a group to key west, vegas, Lazy Bear... and his fun trips to visit us in Brooklyn, happy just to sit and visit and eat the local food. I remember once when we were in the airport waiting to see if he got upgraded and then announce for miss Regina Burns to come to the counter... He turned red and we all laughed. Or visiting you guys in SF, going out to the bar for drinks and then him whipping up a meal. I remember a Beef Stroganoff that was incredible. He was survivor and really held out for the long run, so strong. I wish we could have been there and seen you guys more. He is so missed and loved.

There is no summing up Regi Burns easily. He could always make you feel special, no matter how many people were around. It seemed like his goal was to find common ground once he met you.
He could quote something you'd told him years before. Regi was really listening.
He taught us about politics and how to be involved, but to have reasonable expectations of people.
So incredible in the kitchen. What made him happy was knowing he contributed to your experience by preparing a wonderfully thought out meal.
He was a thoughtful caring partner and husband to Mike. What they had was a great example of what a relationship should be.
A kinder, more considerate man will never exist.
Regi just wanted people around him to be happy. He always got his wish when we were around him.
We love you Regi Burns. You are missed every day. Thank you for being our friend and teaching us how to be good people.

Farewell, my friend, and best wishes on your new journey. Although we only met a few times, I will always remember and enjoy the good times we shared on my visit to San Francisco, when you and your husbear Mike so graciously showed me the city and its many sights. All the best to you and yours in this time of transition. Godspeed.

Any photos from his college days?
I have not seen Regi for forty years, and I remember him as quite different from the photo in the obituary.

We lost a wonderful friend and will miss his smiling face and upbeat attitude. I don't think I've ever heard him say anything bad about anybody, although I recall him saying somebody was 'a little difficult' once.
