Richard Callahan Obituary

Richard J. "Dick" Callahan
November 11, 1940 - January 29, 2021
Ladies and Gentlemen, it is with great sadness that we announce the death of our Dad. Following a short time on the "Injured List," the Happy Camper, the Kid from Avoca, completed his final season. He is Ssssafely home.
Dick was born in Scranton, PA to Richard and Margaret Callahan. He was proud of his Pennsylvania Coal Region roots. His Catholic school education instilled a deep spiritual practice and an understanding of the importance of helping others. He graduated from Scranton Preparatory High School and St. Jerome's University, Waterloo, Canada. He earned several professional designations from the American College of Financial Services.
His successful career in the Insurance business included time in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Missouri before settling with his family in Northern California. He served as a manager, mentoring new agents, and later founded his own agency. Clients appreciated his care and attention to their needs.
His local radio and public address announcing career began at St. Mary's College in Moraga. Dick was most notably recognized as the voice of the Oakland Athletics (2005-2020) and the Golden State Warriors (1981-2000) as well as nine seasons for California Golden Bears football. He delighted in the unique achievement of announcing at least once for EVERY professional Bay Area sport.
Passionate in his support for local youth and charities, Dick generously lent his voice, wit and warmth to countless Bay Area community organizations as a Keynote Speaker, Emcee and Public Address Announcer.
He was a loved and loving man. He will be greatly missed.
Dick is survived by his three daughters: Colleen (Cary Kennerley), Kelly Ann (Eric Black), Katie (Ron Cisco) and two grandchildren, Amelia and Trace.
A Celebration of Life is planned for Thursday, February 25th at 11:00am. Outside, under a large tent at Christ the King Church, Pleasant Hill, CA
It will also be live streamed by the church.

I just came across this and wanted to give my condolences. I worked for Dick at his Insurance company in Lafayette many years ago. He was great to work for and always enjoyed listening to his stories. Rest In Peace.

I just heard of Dick´s passing. He was a real gentleman who had a wonderful offbeat sense of humor. He was one of the best members of the Million Dollar Round Table I ever met. God bless you Dick.

Dick was my friend for over 40 years. We met at a life insurance conference. He volunteered to MC a charity golf tournament and banquet I ran in Southern California - and did so at least 7 times over the years! He also introduced me to Lakers broadcaster Chick Hearn. He was gracious, funny, and had a heart of gold. I will miss him.!

"Mr. C", our beloved boss at MetLife. Dick was one very memorable man and working with him was fun. He was a walking encyclopedia of knowledge on sports. In fact, his memory level was exceedingly high and admirable. You were loved Richard John Callahan! God bless you.

I was shocked and saddened by the early morning conference call from Colleen, Kelly, and Katie barely able to speak through their tears to tell me their dad died earlier Thursday morning. Although apart for 30 years, Dick and I had a strong connection where our daughters were concerned. His love and support of them never faltered. I spoke with Dick the previous week never realizing it would be the last time. My prayers are with my daughters always.
THE "VOICE" is silent yet the reverberation will remain for some time.

I am so sorry about the passing of Richard. What a great man he was. His name will live on in our family. My son, Jesse and Richard talked about Baseball when Jesse was young and still has the A's items that Richard has sent to him. Your father was a great man.
