Richard Halliday Obituary

Richard Halliday
August 23, 1924 - February 16, 2023
We are sad to announce the passing of our loving and caring husband and father, Richard Cowan Halliday, who died peacefully on Thursday, February 16 in the evening. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Lois; his three children Greg (Linda), Andrea (Anice) and Victoria (Bruce); his four grandchildren Melissa (Jason), Toby, Danny (Chantell) and Andrea; and his two great grandchildren Olivia and Luke.
Born on August 23rd, 1924 in Alameda, CA, Richard went to school on the island. After graduating from Alameda High, he continued his education at UC Berkeley, where he joined the Kappa Sigma fraternity and made life-long friendships. During WWII, he trained to fly the B-17 and flew several missions over Europe. He was wounded and received the Purple Heart, leaving the Army with an honorable discharge.
Dick and Lois met at Kings Beach on Lake Tahoe and married on August 13th, 1950. While raising his three children, Dick worked for Kaiser Aluminum and Grand Auto, and later invested in real estate. They retired in their mid-50's, and dedicated the rest of their lives to traveling the world and visiting family. When he wasn't playing tennis or playing Bridge, Richard enjoyed going to the theater, listening to Puccini, doing crossword puzzles and watching animal videos.
Richard was very generous and had a strong moral compass. He was concerned about the cost of housing for seniors in California. He and Lois were instrumental in founding and sustaining La Posada, a retirement community which provides affordable, independent senior living in Santa Cruz, CA. Richard wanted to improve the treatment our wounded vets receive after they come home from war, and so was a passionate supporter of Warrior Foundation Freedom Station, which assists wounded warriors to transition from military to civilian life. Richard and Lois were long term supporters of the Berkeley Repertory Theater, the American Conservatory Theater, and UC Berkeley. Their generosity extended to helping each of their three children and their spouses achieve their dreams.
Richard lived a long and full life, and he lived it his way! He had the heart of a lion and loved his family dearly. He will be missed.

This is Mary (Borne) Palmer, daughter of Ben & Gloria Borne. My sisters Joan, Kathy, Julie, and I would like to express our condolences. We grew up seeing the wonderful
friendship your parents had with ours, and we loved our get-togethers, especially the tennis and pool days. Your dad was a remarkable man, who leaves behind a legacy of genuine kindness, integrity, and charm. We are grateful to have known him.
