Richard Wolfe Obituary

Richard D. Wolfe, M.D. September 15, 1933 - August 2, 2007 Dr. Wolfe passed away August 2, 2007 after a courageous battle with multiple myeloma. Dick was born in Donnellson, IA, September 15, 1933. He received his undergraduate degree with Phi Beta Kappa honors from the University of Iowa and also from the College of Medicine in Iowa City with the highest medical honor of Alpha Omega Alpha in 1958. He interned at Charity Hospital in New Orleans and his radiology residency at New York Hospital, Cornell Medical Center. Dick is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Ruth; and their four sons: Phillip A. Wolfe, M.D. (Lori), of Pleasanton; Brent R Wolfe of Vacaville; Randall C. Wolfe, (Elisa), of Naperville, IL; and Kevin A. Wolfe, of Greenbrae; and five wonderful grandchildren: Nicholas, Trevor, Jessica, Morgan and Jason. He is survived by four siblings: Lois Schau of Donnellson, IA, Marlene Brown of Manley, IA; Douglas Wolfe, Ph.D. of Columbus, OH, and Ron Wolfe of Charlotte, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Russell and Mae Elizabeth Wolfe. Dick retired as a Lt. colonel from the Air Force and is being buried with full military honors at the Sacramento Valley VA National Cemetery in Dixon, CA. His military career included tours as a flight surgeon and hospital commander in Sidi Slimane, Morocco, Tachikawa, Japan where he was chief of radiology, and at Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland AFB, San Antonio, TX. Dr. Wolfe practiced radiology for 28 years in SF, 16 of which at Mount Zion Hospital and UCSF Medical Center and 12 in private practice. He specialized in arthrograms, seeing many Bay Area sport professionals and wrote and published a book on knee arthography. Dick spent 13 years coaching his four sons in Little League baseball and served as president of the League. He also served as president of Pop Warner football and did annual physicals for the players and was the team physician. He served on the Parks and Recreation Commission of San Rafael for 13 years. He was also a lifelong Giant fan, taking his sons to spring training in Arizona each year. Dick was a member of SIRS, American College of Radiology, charter member of the Society of Gastrointestinal Radiologists, California and SF Radiological Society and the Radiological Society of North of America. He was on the teaching staff at UCSF Medical School. Two memorial services celebrating Dick's life will be held Tuesday, August 7, one at 10:30 AM at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield, CA, and also at 4:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church of San Rafael. Dr. Wolfe leaves behind a legacy of service to his country and love of his family. He and his family have much to be proud of. I also served at Sidi Slimane AFB in Morocco and as a member of the Association Board of Directors. All of our prayers go out to his family and all who knew and loved him.

Dick was an extremely valuable member of the Board of Directors of the Moroccan Reunion Association and served as Director For International Cooperation. As such he worked with me and the Ambassador from Malta to Morocco to secure funds for a day care center in the village of Tamara Morocco. He will be visably missed.

Our hearts go out to all of the Wolfe family. Dr. Wolfe was truly one of the most nice and caring persons I've every known. Some of my fondest memories growing up was time spent at the Wolfes house. Dr. Wolfe will always be remembered for not only for being a dedicated husband and father but also for teaching us kids how to be play the game of baseball the right way. I have known all of you for the past 35 years. I have great memories of all of us in the stands at Alberts Park. & SR High.
I am so sorry to hear of Dick's passing.I know we have lost a good friend. I lost my husband Ross 12/7/2006. Not easy! Lillian is away with our 18 year old granddaughter Jessica in Canada.(Ross's daughter) I will tell all of Dr.Wolfs passing.

Dr. Wolfe was my radiologist in San Francisco during the 1980s. He was a wonderful and knowledgeable doctor that took time to explain all procedures and test findings. He will be a great lost to the community and the radiology field.
