Robert D'Arcy Obituary

Robert William D'Arcy

Oct 17, 1949 -- Feb 6, 2020

ROBERT W. D'ARCY, 70, died suddenly following emergency heart surgery in San Francisco. Son of the late Jeannette (Goudreau) and William D'Arcy, Bob grew up in Stratford, CT, and was a state champion swimmer in high school. A member of the varsity swim team at Yale University, he graduated in 1971 with a degree in Russian history. In the mid-'70s, he moved to San Francisco, where for 45 years he worked variously as a legal editor / paralegal / executive administrator for firms including Pillsbury Madison, Wells Fargo, and Charles Schwab. He retired in June 2019.
Bob was fluent in Russian and Spanish, and could get by in Turkish and French. For decades, he would read one book in English followed by one in another language, just to keep his skills sharp. His love of language was surpassed only by his love of adventure travel and his desire to experience other cultures. In recent years, this spirit took him to Tajikistan, Chile, India, South Africa, and Japan. Through his travels, he developed a passion for photography, which he hoped to continue in earnest during retirement.
An outdoorsman at heart, Bob was an avid camper, hiker, kayaker, and recreational scuba diver (also trained in rescue diving). He was active in his beloved Russian Hill neighborhood community, and known by all for his expansive mind, understated humor, and his quiet friendliness, kindness and compassion.
Bob is survived by his sister, Barbara Kiernan (Jeff) of Milford, CT; six nephews and a niece; a beloved aunt, Carolyn D'Arcy; and his special friends, Tom McGovern and Marge Brawley. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Kathy, and his loving companion, Paula Brawley.
Donations in Bob's memory may be made to Save the Children. A memorial service will be held at a future date.

Gone ~ but never forgotten. I always think of laughs we shared and the times when someone would test your patience. Things are so very different in the world now. I am happy you are away from this craziness. I miss you and I wish you continued Rest In Peace.

I miss you! Such an intelligent, handsome, gifted human being who I considered a great conversationalist, even when the things you expressed went over my head. You were always there to let me vent and test out my corny jokes. A true friend like none other. I miss your calls where you always announced "This is Bob D'Arcy!" And I always exclaimed "How could I not know who you are?" I was so excited for you when you said you were retiring. But then I got angry because I would lose my buddy that I had grown accustomed to working with over the years. I can only hope that I was a good friend to you and always looked out for you like a mother hen.

Oh my, I am just devastated upon hearing of Bob's passing. We lost touch a few years ago but for many years after Bob left Pillsbury to go to Wells Fargo we would gather once or twice a year for lunch with friends and hear all about Bob's travels. One thing that touched me was how much he loved and missed Paula for all these years after she passed. Well, at long last, they are together again. Farewell Bob and I'll see you again in a better place.

I worked with him for five years at Pillsbury and he reminded me of "Mr. Darcy" in Pride & Prejudice -- gentlemanly and always well dressed, but also a bit boyish, with a slightly subversive humor and deep intelligence. Bye, D'Arcy ....

Sorry for your loss. I graduated from St. Joe's, #2 in class, right behind Bob, #1. We had a friendly competition. He was a brilliant mind and reading about his life, an avid explorer of other cultures. I'm sure he will be missed. My sincere condolences to his family & friends.
