Robert Fennell Obituary

Robert Anthony Fennell

November 5, 1939 - September 9, 2015

Robert Anthony Fennell passed away September 9, 2015 surrounded by his loving family.
Bob, a fifth generation San Franciscan, was born on 11/5/1939, and raised in Noe Valley.
He attended Riordan High School where he was an outstanding track star.
He graduated from SF State with a B.A. and M.A. degree in Special Education.
He worked as a lifeguard at both Fleishhacker's Pool and Stinson Beach. He became an SF Firefighter in 1966. He had an illustrious career and was given numerous meritorious awards for outstanding service and bravery; and he was recognized as "Fireman of the Year". He established the Water Rescue Program in the SFFD, which was responsible for saving many lives, and continues to do so.
He was truly a "Renaissance Man" in that he excelled in many areas of life: author, sculptor, poet, athlete, waterman, outdoorsman.
His family was his priority in life. He is survived by his loving wife Joanne, and adoring children Mike (Lia) and Keri (Andres), and four wonderful grandchildren (Lilly, Nico, Meghan, and Avery). He is also survived by his loving sister, Kathy (Joe) and devoted brother Gerry.
The family wishes to thank Kaiser Hospital of Marin for their compassion and professionalism, especially K. Muirhead, M.D. along with Aimy Tanaguchi - Wilbur, M.D. for her devotion to the family.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, 9/16/2015 at 11:00am at Mission Dolores Church, 3321 16th St. @ Dolores, SF., with interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, 1500 Mission Rd Colma immediately after Mass.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the San Francisco Fire Department Water Rescue Unit and the Marin Humane Society are appreciated.

Bob was a true gentleman and a good friend to all of us who were lucky enough to know him. He was an invaluable help to the GGNRA and Presidio Fire Dept in getting our water rescue program launched. As much as I admired Bob as an instructor, I was fortunate to consider him as a friend and I think I speak for all the lifeguards, Rangers , and especially firefighters when I say God bless and a job well done. Rest now faithful servant.
