November 16, 1917 - July 5, 2015
Dr. Robert A. Mendle, family doctor, world traveler, teacher, lover of the great outdoors, and official birdwatcher passed away peacefully in his home on July 5th. Born November 16th, 1917, Dr. Mendle lived an incredibly full life. He was a San Francisco native and resided in the Richmond district almost the entirety of his life. Dr. Mendle was blessed to meet his wife of 74 years, Barbara Paula Murphy, in the founding class of Presidio Middle School. Dr. Mendle and Barbara married in 1941 and a few years later bought their house that they have lived in for 65 years on 29th Avenue. In 1947 they welcomed their son, Robert, and had many wonderful family years together. Every night he and his wife enjoyed the tradition of having a drink before dinner (for him a Gibson with a twist, for her a V.O. on ice) while playing cribbage before having dinner, or before socializing with friends, watching Giants games, attending the symphony, or spending nights out enjoying the city that they loved so well.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

Just tried to call Bob and Barbaras phone #,
was disconnected. I ck'd obits, and discovered that Bob had passed. I stayed in touch with him over the years, as one can see, it's been a while since I called him. I dropped by and saw
him maybe 5 yrs ago, he had aged like we all do, still he was filled with stories about some of the pictures on his wall, was his 'cute' self.
He was my Dr. for many years, he cared, had great humor, was fun to visit even though i might have been sick.
I loved the guy, my parents knew him from middle school, they friends in common, all have passed away, that's what happens.
As I look at his picture, I get warm feelings for him again, great guy, great Dr., glad I got to know him a little. As my golf game starts to wear down, I remember when he quit,
I was shocked, when he explained, I understood, and now, I am facing the same slippery slope.
Best to his family, Barbara, hi to you, too.
Bob

My first memory of Dr. Mendle was my first appointment in his waiting room, waiting an hour and becoming more and more irritated with each passing minute. Finally I was called into his office. Five minutes in his presence I knew then that if I had to wait three hours to see Dr. Mendle, I had no problem with it.
For the next ten years I continued living and working in San Francisco and when the time arose I'd see Dr. Mendle and his diagnosis was always spot on, but what made him more than just one of the two finest physicians I've ever had (I'm 68) is that he became one of my closest friends and when times were troubling for me, Dr. Mendle was always there to talk to, and never too busy to see me, and always giving advice I could use.
Robert Mendle was the kind of person that Hippocrates wrote his oath for for when Robert Mendle became an M.D. he followed the spirit and letter of the oath.
Today is the day I learned of my friend's death. I will always be grateful for the time I have known Dr. Mendle, the care he provided me and the friend he always was and will always remain in my heart. I thank him for his kindness and for always being there. There is only one word to describe Dr. Robert Mendle: Special.

I was deeply saddened when I heard of Bob's passing. Our family has had a long and wonderful relationship with Bob and I will miss his humor and caring. As a doctor and a person, there was none better.

I was saddened of learning of the passing of a wonderful doctor and human being this past weekend in the SF Chronicle, Bob was kind, thoughtful and generous, I recall going out to lunch with him frequently and he almost always drove. He was a very good doctor, devoted to his patients. I was blessed to have known him.

His sense of humor and current knowledge of what was going on with the San Francisco Giants always put a smile on my face.

I cannot express how much Bob will be missed. On a personal note, he was a best are caring friend to my parents and to me personally for the 65 years we were so fortunate to know him. To my parents and aunt, he and Barbara could not have closer or better friends. While Bob is no longer with us, I will always have the wonderful memories of Bob and all he has given us. --- Sandy Peiser
