Robert Walker Obituary

Robert M. Walker
May 28, 1941 - July 28, 2023
Robert "Bob" Walker, 82, of Pebble Beach, CA, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2023 while enjoying a sauvignon blanc (with ice) watching a Yankees game. He was born on May 28, 1941, in Stanford, CA, to Frederick and Helen (nee Kelleher) and predeceased by siblings Mikie, Dodie, Fred and Janie. Bob is survived by his beloved wife Judy (nee Barrett), his loving children Kelley (husband Alan), Mark, Matt (wife Jacquie), and his cherished grandchildren Jack, Ryan, Sam, Regan, Kyle, Barrett, and Casey. He is also survived by his sister Katie Stevens (husband Bill).
Growing up, Bob lived in the SF Bay Area, Long Island and Beverly Hills. Always a man of deep faith, he often looked back fondly on his days as an acolyte at St. Dominic's Church SF. Bob was very proud to be educated in the Jesuit tradition at St. Ignatius College Prep, graduating in 1959, and Santa Clara University in 1963. In 1960, Bob met the love of his life and wife Judy at a school mixer. They shared a wonderful life together for over 63 years. Bob proudly served his country as a United States Marine Corps Reservist during the 1960's, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Professionally Bob had a passion for Banking starting his career in the Santa Clara branch of Wells Fargo as a trainee. Over the course of his 40-year career he went on to lead banks through many turbulent economic times as the Chief Credit Officer of Crocker National Bank and Wells Fargo, as well as Vice Chairperson of both Valley National Bank (AZ) and Union Bank.
Outside of his professional life, Bob had a passion for golf. He could often be found on the golf course with Judy or friends. Bob's golfing highlights include playing in the AT&T Pro-Am at Pebble Beach and scoring an incredible 5 holes-in-one over the years. He was member of the Monterey Peninsula Country Club, The Pebble Beach & Tennis Club, and formerly the Pacific Union Club, the Peninsula CC and Phoenix CC.
Bob will be remembered for his unwavering love and support for his family and his dedication to his country and career. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, integrity, and a zest for life that will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A private memorial mass will be held to honor Bob's life. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to a charity of your choice in his memory. Please join us in celebrating and remembering the remarkable life of Robert "Bob" Walker. May he rest in peace.

Great mentor and boss and literary banker (the James Joyce of Credit). He had much to do with advancing my career - plus he was fun. Blessings on his family - his spirit will live on in many.

At Union Bank where he served as vice chairman, Bob Walker's high intellect, wisdom and finely-honed sense of humor was nothing short of extraordinary. It was a privilege to know Bob and to work with him on various projects before I retired from the bank. I also applaud his service to country and community. He leaves a proud legacy to his family.

I truly enjoyed learning from Bob during his time serving in the capacity of Vice Chair at Union Bank. As a young investor relations professional, I appreciated his "war stories" about life in the trenches of the banking industry. Bob had a special way of making everyone in the room smile...even the crustiest of Wall Street veterans. My sympathies to his family.

Bob and Judy were our next door neighbors in Atherton for a number of years and we've missed them ever since they left us for Carmel. Grateful however for the years they were beside us!
RIP Bob....

I had the good fortune of working directly with and for Bob early in my career at Union Bank. He was a mentor, both professionally and personally. I know well how much he loved his family; he often spoke in glowing terms about his children. And in an era and industry that was far from progressive, Bob was well ahead of his time in promoting women into executive ranks. A good man who will be missed.

I worked for Bob over several years at Crocker. We shared many travels together to clients throughout the Western U.S. Bob was an inspiring leader and even better, a friend.

As a retiree of Union Bank, I had the privilege if work interactions with Bob. I respected him and felt that he returned the favor. I reported directly to Linda Better and when I notified her of my retirement in 1999 she informed Bob and I recall fondly Bob's comment to me:- "I'm mad as hell at you for retiring"
Rest In Peace Bob, you will always be remembered as my friend.
