Sal Carson Obituary

Sal Carson (Carcione) Passed away peacefully on October 19, 2007 at the age of 86, surrounded by family, after a dignified and courageous battle with congestive heart failure. Sal was born in San Francisco and raised in Oakland where he graduated from University High School. He started his band at the age of 15 and became a very successful band leader. People remember his band at Hoberg's Resort, where he played for 25 plus years and his big band at the Forty Niners football games, where on many occasions he played, solo trumpet, the "Star Spangled Banner" on the 50 yard line. Sal devoted much of his time to the Special Olympics and the Godfather Club for the Saint Vincent School for Boys. Sal is survived by his wife of 65 years, Kathleen; his two daughters JoAnne Grasso, Karen Loing and was predeceased by his daughter Kathy Carcione. Father-in-law to John Grasso; grandfather to Kerry, Kathy, Krissy, Tom, Laura and Forrester plus 10 great grandchildren. Brother to Sylvia, Valeria and Gloria; uncle to Donna, Linda, Dianna and other nieces and nephews. Also Matthew Baumann, Linda's husband, who was a good and kind friend to Sal. Funeral Services and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date on Cobb Mountain in Lake County. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to the Special Olympics, St. Vincent's School for Boys in San Rafael or a charity of your choice.

Sincere condolences to the love of Sal's life, the gracious and beautiful Kathleen, to JoAnne, Karen and families. Those wonderful years at Hoberg's bring a smile to my face to this day. My parents, Ann & Al Liva continued to enjoy Sal's musicmaking in more recent years at Westlake Joe's. He always had a smile on his face, an enthusiastic greeting for everyone and a song in his heart. Along with the great loss to your family, he will be missed by the countless people whose lives he touched and made brighter. Me ke aloha pumehana.

So sorry to hear about Sal. He gave me my first chance in playing "Big Band" music. Five of those years were on 49er's Band under his direction. I feel a need to say that Sal was truly loyal and wanted to help people in getting established in the Bay Area music business. You were also a solid member of your community and a credit to Local No. 6, AF of M. Good-bye Sal, I will always have a special place in my heart for you.

I was very sorry to hear of Sal's passing. I haven't seen him in 40+ years, but he was a big part of a group of girls from Healdsburg's memories of Hoberg's! We spent two summers after graduating from high school in 1963 working at the resort as waitresses and dancing the nights away to the wonderful music of Sal Carson. He was a kind man and we all enjoyed the time spent knowing him so many years ago. My condolences to his family.

I knew Sal way back when I went to Uni High with him and he had his band and some of the originals I remember were Harold Minas;Jimmy Kaar; Lennie Sequera and Al Young. Boy; a long time ago, maybe 1938. I`ll always remember Sal as a good guy and my sympathies to all his family.

I knew Sal for 35 years, and he was a warm, humorous, talented and very kind considerate human being. I just had lunch with Sal at Original Joe's in San Francisco on September 14th for our memorial for Max Weiss, who knew Sal for a lot longer than I did. He will be missed.
