T. Bolts Obituary

Brother Bill died as a Marianist Brother (Society of Mary) on July 3, 2025 in Cupertino, CA. He was born in San Francisco, CA. and was a member of the first graduating class of Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco. He made his first religious profession as a Marianist brother in 1954. In his educational career he earned his bachelor's degree from Saint Mary's College in Moraga, CA in 1957. Later he earned a master's degree from UCLA and a PhD from Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh.
Bro. Bill spent 13 years teaching religion and history at Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, CA and another two years teaching history at his alma mater, Archbishop Riordan. Bro. Bill served on the Provincial Administration; he ministered at the Newman Center at UC, Santa Cruz and he spent more than ten years as the assistant administrator at Queen of Apostles Parish in San Jose. For a short time he served in Religious Education Office for the Archdiocese of Vancouver in British Columbia until he retired to the Marianist Center in Cupertino, CA in 2009 . He died there in hospice care on July 3rd after an extended illness.
Bro. Bill is survived by his nephews Patrick, Michael, John & Dan and nieces Noreen, Christine & Kathleen; as well as numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Family and friends are invited to Bro. Bill's services at the Marianist Center Chapel, 22683 Alcalde Road, Cupertino, CA 95014: Viewing will begin at 4:00 pm followed by a Vigil Service at 5:00 pm on Monday, July 14, 2025. His Funeral Mass will also take place at the Marianist Center on Tuesday, July 15th at 10:00 am (which can also be livestreamed: https://tinyurl.com/5f5v4y8m) with burial immediately following at Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations/Memorials may be made to The Marianists, 4425 West Pine Blvd. St. Louis, MO 63108.

I never had Brother Bolts as a teacher, but I believe he was at Riordan when I was (1967-1971). I know he made a major contribution to making the school what it was.

He was quite a treasure at Riordan for everyone of us. He lives on in those he helped grow into adulthood. Condolences to his family.

Br. Bolts was such a kind man and a true keeper of the Marianist flame. He loved Archbishop Riordan High School so much and was a great presence. He remembered my husband Gerry O'Driscoll and was very kind to my son Sean O'Driscoll when he was a student. He truly helped to form men of character. He will be missed.

Our family met Brother Bill early in his religious life as a Marianist. His warm welcome and lovely smile greeted us over the many years of his ministry in Northern California, even as he faced physical challenges in recent years.
