Brian Spiers Obituary

Brian F. Spiers
01/13/1957 - 02/12/2026
Brian Francis Spiers passed away unexpectedly on February 12, 2026, at the age of 69 while walking his dog among the vineyards at his home in Geyserville, California. Born and raised in San Francisco's foggy Outer Sunset, Brian attended St. Gabriel's and Archbishop Riordan High School, where he would later become Chairman of the Board and honored with the Chaminade Award.
Brian built a wonderful life with his beloved wife, Debi. The two would have celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this year. He cherished his children, Erin, Sean, and Ryan, and Joey, his son-in-law, was truly a son to him. In recent years, he reveled in his role as "Gunka" to his adored grandchildren, Sophie and Lucy. He was preceded in death by his mother, Patsy, and niece, Theresa. He is survived by his father, Sean, and his brothers Michael (Jack), John (Bernadette), Steve (Peter), and Dan (Máire); and Áine (Chris, deceased), who was like a sister to him, along with many nieces and nephews.
Brian took great joy in traveling with his family. Together, they spent summers at their Tahoe family cabin, hosting lively Fourth of July block parties. He even braved – mostly against his will – the occasional family trip to Disneyland. But his true happiest place on Earth was Italy, a place he returned to often, whether with Debi or the whole family in tow.
Beyond his immediate family, Brian loved big family gatherings-the more raucous, the better. Whether it was Thanksgiving horse races at Golden Gate Fields, Easter white elephant with the same recycled gifts each year, or the overly-competitive annual Bocce Ball tournament, Brian thrived on a good time.
Brian had a knack of turning ordinary get-togethers into unforgettable memories. He hosted Christmas Eve parties that began at the dining table and ended with everyone dancing on the coffee table - even Grandpa. If you gave Brian control of the music at a party, there was a good chance you'd hear The Rolling Stones, and an even better chance the neighbors would too.
Brian's professional journey began as a kid behind the counter at Herb's Deli. In his adult years, he grew from construction journeyman to eventually founding Brian Spiers Development. As a visionary developer, he left his impact on San Francisco - particularly Market Street - with bold, vibrant projects. Along the way, he also owned two local dive bars, The Bitter End and Lucky 13, taking immense pride in both.
Outside of work, Brian had many passions. He loved his dogs (Maddie, Belle, and Penny), immersed himself in historical nonfiction, and grew a deep appreciation for wine, which led him to develop the new family home in Alexander Valley. A lifelong lover of soccer, he played for St. Gabriel's, Riordan, Glens, and The Overlords, later coaching all three of his children's teams. And for one day each year, he fancied himself a golfer at the Potato Head Classic.
Brian was a fiery spirit with a mischievous sense of humor and the loudest laugh in the room. But beneath it all, he also carried a quiet compassion he only revealed when it was needed most - often catching you by surprise. He operated by his own rules, spoke boldly, and never held back. Brian truly lived fully without hesitation. Or, as he would shout with a grin:
Tonight we ride. Tomorrow we water the horses.
We would like to invite you to join the family for Visitation at 10:00 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, 2559 40th Ave, San Francisco, on Monday, February 23. The family asks that memorial gifts be dedicated to Archbishop Riordan High School's Tuition Assistance Fund, in memory of Brian Spiers, 175 Frida Kahlo Way, San Francisco, CA 94112.

I never met Brian in person. My brother-in-law, Ken Waldeck, worked with Brian to fashion our ground lease agreement for 2100 Market Street. When I step in as manager I had several occasions to get to know Brian through phone conversations. He was a genuine pleasure to work with. Our family sends our deepest condolences.

Teammate, Schoolmate, Friend, book sharer.

The soccer community in SF is a large family so not surprising to have come across Brian when he was playing with Vikings youth clubs in the mid-60's. Their team was loaded with all those Irish kids that looked alike... i didn't know they were all brothers and cousins. Then i met Brian at Riordan... what a character... he made me smile or laugh everytime we passed each other in the halls. Sneaky smart and wickedly funny. I loved being on the same team with him. He was never short on encouragement when you were down or celebration when we won. Those nights with Brian at the Abbey Tavern are forever memorable.

Until we meet on the other side. Salúd.

Words seem inadequate to express how deeply sorry I am for Brian´s passing and for the profound loss felt by his family and all who loved him.

I´ve known Brian since we were freshmen at Riordan. As the story goes, during our senior year I sold my dad´s blue 1963 Lincoln Continental to Brian, his late cousin, and his tall St. Gabe´s classmate. Oh, the stories that infamous Lincoln could tell!

Brian gave so much of himself to his family, friends, community, and the Riordan family he loved. What I will always remember most was how present he was. When he spoke with you, you felt his kindness, sincerity, and quick wit. He looked you in the eye and made even a brief conversation meaningful. That was simply who he was.

Most recently, we served together on our 50th Riordan graduating class committee, and I came away from every meeting grateful for his friendship.

We have lost a shining light. To Debi and the family, my heartfelt condolences. I will keep Brian in my prayers.

Like George Bailey in Its a Wonderful Life, Brian - with his beautiful family and more friends than one could ever count- is the "richest man in town"..... and in this case- the most humorous one around! The Sunset is raining tears of sadness imaging our fair City without his irrepressible joy. Love to Debi and the wonderful Spiers family.

Brian was my lifelong friend for the past 65 years. He combined a keen intellect with incomparable street smarts and the quickest wit around. He was the life of the party, a brilliant businessman, and remarkably generous. He leaves behind LEGIONS of friends. Above all, he was a great family man. Brian left us way too early, while at the top of his game. To quote from the Last Hurrah, "How in the world do you thank a man for a million laughs". RIP.

My favorite memory of Brian is seeing him and his family on his boat in Lake Tahoe. The entire family covered in zinc and cowering under the Bimini. After finally figuring out how to tie up my comment to him was ... white people like you won´t last long out here.

My heart aches for Debbi and family. He will always be remembered fondly. So many great memories, such an unforgettable man. He was a rock star!!!
