William Duggan Obituary

William "Bill" J. Duggan
04/21/1944 - 12/09/2025
William J. "Bill" Duggan, born April 21, 1944, in San Francisco, passed away peacefully December 9, 2025, after a valiant battle with cancer.
A native San Franciscan, Bill is a graduate of St. Emydius Elementary School ('58), Archbishop Riordan High School ('62), San Francisco Mortuary College ('63), and the University of San Francisco ('67). A proud veteran of the Air Force Reserve, Bill served with the 51st Transportation Squadron at Osan Air Base in South Korea after the 1968 Pueblo Incident. He fulfilled his lifelong dream of returning to Osan in 2019.
Bill was a pillar of the San Francisco community. He was an active member of the Olympic Club, Young Men's Institute, Knights of Columbus, and Knights of the Holy Sepulchre. For almost 60 years, Bill faithfully served families with compassion and care at Duggan's Serra Mortuary, which he helped found in 1963 with his parents. He was also a cofounder of Valley Memorial Cemetery and Funeral Home in Novato. In recognition of these contributions, he was bestowed the honor of Grand Marshal of the 2015 San Francisco St. Patrick's Day Parade, one of the great highlights of his life.
Bill has rejoined his parents, Bud and Madeline Duggan, and sisters Maureen Woods and Patricia Stanley. He leaves behind his loving wife, Patricia Byrne Duggan; his children, Winifred Sullivan (Daniel), William Duggan, Maura Duggan, and Caitlin Luiten (Anton); his grandchildren, who were his greatest joys, Jackie, Sean, Olive, Rosie, and Poppy; his brother, Dan Duggan (Karen); and many nieces and nephews.
Bill will be remembered for his Irish pride, his sincerity and humor, his adventurous spirit, and his true zest for life-always with a story to tell, a smile to share, and an open heart. He will be dearly missed, but his warmth and legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched.
The family would like to thank Mercedes Martinez, Mary Gaffney, and the staff at San Francisco Towers for their devotion and care for Bill.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bill's name to "The Bud and Madeline Duggan Family Scholarship Fund" at Archbishop Riordan High School, 175 Frida Kahlo Way, San Francisco, CA 94112.
Friends are invited to visit on Sunday, December 21st, at Duggan's Serra Mortuary, 500 Westlake Ave. beginning at 2pm. A vigil service will held at 4pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Brendan's Church, 29 Rockaway Ave. in San Francisco on Monday, December 22nd at 10am. Bill will be laid to rest at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colma.
