Thomas Juhl Obituary

Thomas Richard "Dick" Juhl
03/23/2023
Dick Juhl, a much-loved and admired healthcare professional and longtime resident of San Francisco, died unexpectedly on Thursday, March 23, 2023. Born Thomas Richard Juhl, the only child of Thomas Christian Juhl and Frances Marie Dunn Juhl, Dick was born in Denver, Colorado and grew up in Golden and Lakewood, he graduated from Lakewood High in 1959.
In 1963 Richard graduated from Colorado State, and earned an M.D. from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 1967. In 1968 he began service in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, continued in the Reserves at Letterman Army Hospital in the Presidio, and was honorably discharged in 1976.
Dick completed a residency in psychiatry at UCSF in 1981. He was employed at the Tenderloin Mental Health Clinic until retirement, becoming board certified in 1988.
Richard spent "countless tranquil hours," walking cemeteries and photographing gravestones. After researching, especially for Veterans, he sent his work to the "Find-a-Grave" website. Over a decade Dick created 6,793 memorials and added 22,577 photographs to help families and genealogists. An artist at heart, he became famous for his ongoing garage art project, "The Kitsch Wall."
Dick's friends and colleagues loved his generosity, charm, and mischievous humor. We cherish our memories of him and remember how, with an easy laugh and good nature, he made this world a better place.
Survivors include his uncle, Allen Dunn, and numerous cousins in Colorado and California. There will be an unveiling of a mosaic in celebration of Richard's life in front of 953 Sanchez St. on Sunday, March 23 at 11 a.m. If you cannot attend, contact Susan (415-641-1309) for an opportunity to make your thoughts known at this remembrance.
