Thomas Moulin Obituary

Thomas Morrill Moulin

September 4, 1928 - September 18, 2018

Thomas Moulin, 90, of San Rafael, California, passed away peacefully in his sleep. Born in Berkeley, California to Raymond and Dorothy (Kellogg) Moulin. He graduated from Berkeley High School and enjoyed his studies at UC Berkeley, as a member of the Theta Delta Chi fraternity.

Thomas came from a long line of Professional Photographers known throughout the Bay Area. He joined his father, Raymond, and Uncle Irving at the historic Gabriel Moulin Studios of San Francisco, founded in 1906 by his grandfather. Tom and Jean bought the Studio in 1977, when Raymond retired, and continued to document the city and society. In 2013, Tom and Jean retired to focus on their Photographic Archives Collection dating from 1890 to 2010. Throughout Tom's life, he enjoyed all of the friendships and camaraderie of being a member of The Bohemian Club, The Family Club, The St. Francis Yacht Club and The Movie Group. He was overjoyed to be honored as a Distinguished Bohemian and was proud to be a member of the Old Guard. When he was not working, he loved spending time at his home in Marin, with family and friends, sailing, barbequing, and sharing a good time.

Thomas is survived by his loving wife, Jean, after a remarkable 54 years of marriage. He is lovingly remembered by his five children, Mark (wife Bari), Blake, Kirk (wife Monika), Claudia and Samantha (husband Kevin); and his 4 grandchildren, Jessica, Jonathon, Thea and Parker. We all take comfort knowing he is reunited with his son, Philip, who passed in 1983.

A celebration of Tom's life will be held, for friends and family, on January 30, 2019 from 2-5pm at the St. Francis Yacht Club. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Tom to your favorite charity.

I fondly recall many events Tom and I shared and for several years I commuted with Tom to San Francisco where I worked with him and we always enjoyed each others company.

I'm late to pay my respects to Tom as he truly was a very fine Man and excellent Photographer. We shared many different relationships as I worked with him, I worked for him and I commissioned him. I remember his Dad Raymond and I think I was the only one that would ride with him in the City. Tom and I commuted to the City from Marin for a couple of years so we became close and I always enjoyed having Gin and tonic at his house and Jean always making me feel welcomed. You are in my heart.

My sincere condolences. Thomas Moulin will be remembered for strengthening the legacy of Moulin Studios and its treasures of historical photographs. Decades ago in North Beach, I had an interesting chat about photography with Mr. Moulin. Too bad I didn't take up his offer of getting a book on historic North Beach. As time goes by, Moulin's black/ white imagery will be further etched into San Francisco history. Thomas Moulin lived a long and interesting life.
