Tim Pearce Obituary

Tim Pearce
July 8, 1953 - December 16, 2023
First and foremost, Tim was a third generation San Franciscan and waterman. He grew up in West Portal and attended St. Brendan's where he was part of the championship basketball team that went to Los Angeles for the State title in 1967. As a standout pitcher at Abraham Lincoln High School, he was offered a scholarship to Stanford. But his love was the ocean.
Summers were spent in Capitola where Tim began surfing at an early age. Paddling out at Privates, Cement Ship, Pleasures, Cowells, The Lane, 26th Avenue, four-mile, County Line, Ano Nuevo and more, Tim had a dream-like childhood of surfing. A waterman from the very beginning, Tim took his surfing to the highest levels and the furthest reaches of the world: Hawaii, Mexico, Canada, France, England, Spain, Portugal, Tahiti, Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and all up and down the California coast and even Kelly Slater's Surf Ranch, he relished surf adventure.
He was most proud of his over 60 years of surfing in the City at Kelly's, VFW, Middle of the Beach, Deadman's, The Fort, The Cliffs and even Mine Docks. This is how Tim will want to be remembered as a waterman.
A 30 year- employee of SF Rec and Park, Tim was part of the Park Patrol. He covered every inch of Rec and Park properties throughout the City. Proud to know all the "hidden plumbing" thanks to his dad, the late John Pearce, former head Plumber for the City.
But Tim's greatest pride was in his family. His children were his primary focus. Coaching baseball and basketball, building a batting cage and basketball court in the backyard, supporting travel teams, batting practice and working on free throws, Tim was the number one fan at his children's sports.
Then came the grandchildren. He couldn't have been more pleased with the role of Papa to Ziggy (7) and Aurora Mae (10 months).
In later years, Tim fulfilled a dream to own a mountain home in Lassen County where the children and grandchildren gathered for hot summer days in Papa's awesome forest pool or on his little fishing boat on Lake Almanor.
He was predeceased by his parents, John and Vivienne.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah; son, Sonny (Katie); daughter, India (Casey); brother, John (Heidi); sister, Bev; grandson, Ziggy Moon; and granddaughter, Aurora Mae; and many nieces and nephews.
To all of Tim's friends, your love and support will never be forgotten. He treasured his friends greatly and you guys made these past few years truly meaningful. Thank you!
To his beloved pets who crossed the Rainbow Bridge: Jude I, Butch, Jude II, LULU and Minnie and the cats--Ginger and Scotty (mostly cats but dogs in their hearts). They will wait for him. He will have sticks and tennis balls and you'll swim together again. The cats may not swim but you never know with them.

Tim was my baby brother and I will always think of him as such. He is the baby in the photo. Our summers were spent at the beach in Capitola. I gave Tim his first surfboard when he was about seven years old. Thank you to all who sent memories of my brother. I am the little girl standing next to my Aunt Shirley and Tim is in the inner tube. Our father, standing in back of Tim, had us in the ocean as babies, and that is how Tim became a waterman.

Tim, you have a big heart! You were an important part of this kids early days...playing in Hardiman´s garage, on the blacktop at SBS...practicing in the church hall...the teenage fair at the Cow Palace (thanks Bev). Always a friend and never a snob, you had time for all of us and gave your star power to the band. You´re missed but never forgotten!
Still playing after all these years!

What a beautiful human being. Always consistent with his openness. Today thy a part of history is gone is an understatement for all of us who surfed with him. Forever in my heart Tim.

It was a joy to always see Tim with his smile and fun personality. Known the Pearce family for about 20 years and have ALWAYS admired their love for each other. Tim´s humility and giving nature is something I will never forget. A great man, husband and father. Love and peace to Sara, Sonny and India.
RIP Tim.

Tim was a good friend. Between the surf trips and surfing at Ocean Beach and Santa Cruz, we had many great memories. The trips to The Ranch were especially fun. Watching Sonny and Sean play baseball together at SH provided time for more good conversations. We all lost a good person. My sincere condolences to Sarah, Sonny and India.

I lived up the street on Merced Ave and went to Lincoln HS too. Tim and I surfed a lot together during high school. I remember once I was invited to spend the weekend at the Capitola Beach house with Tim and his parents. I had such a wonderful time with them all and of course surfing Capitola.
One night while staying in Capitola Tim´s parents drove to the movie theater in the Village and saw "Easy Rider". The movie had just been released. What a movie! Though I really didn´t grasp what was going on.
Tim was a great guy and thoughtful.
Rest in Peace Tim

I can´t imagine how difficult this time must be for the family.
Tim , what I knew of him was epitome of term
"Nice guy "
He Loved adventure and I was always happy to hear a good story from him at
Parties ...
I loved the shark tattoo
On his left ? Calf ! Where a shark bit him !!
Sarah was reading on beach ? Setting , Tonga?
He managed to swim in to shore and quietly told Sarah matter of factly " I was just bite by a shark ", she looks up, ocean full of blood , she quickly got out her tourniquet , having just taken emergency outdoor medicine course , !! then the tale of longest boat ride to rescue in primitive conditions and nice but primitive people. !! Very frightening edge of seat material !
Now that´s a tattoo that is meaningful and way before the trend began !! I´m glad he lived to tell that and many other adventures!
Live in the great memories , special moments and his genuine love of all of you .

So long Big Kahuna your family will feel the loss of your presence but I hope they can eventually stop being sad that you have gone away but glad that you were here. It's very hard to do,but it can be done.

Aside from Tim´s status as a legendary waterman, sportsman and family man, he would like you to know that he was an avid music lover, with a rather eclectic taste. First and foremost he loved the Beatles, (perhaps the last sounds he heard).
He loved the music of the 60s, especially Bay Area bands like Quicksilver Msgr Service, Santana, Harvey Mandel, the Chambers Brothers and Sons of Chaplin. He also loved the Stones, having seen them live many times.
Frank Zappa also featured a large place in Tim´s favorites.
Jazzman Chet Baker was also in there. He also supported his son´s Sonny´s psychedelic rock band, Love Dimension, who really capture the SF Sound of the 60s (check them out, you won´t be disappointed)
Tim, I hope you´re grooving to cool jams in your new abode.
RIP my brother

Best cousin ever. We had so many crazy fun adventures together. Tim and Sarah were with us on what turned out to be the longest most expensive first date in history- six weeks in Bali. Then there was literally bumping into Tim at 2:30am in a seedy pizza place on Geary after a concert...
Simon and I will remember Tim for his kindness and sincerity, his love for Sarah and his family and his commitment to adventure. Love you always.

I´m really sorry to hear of Tim´s death- way too early! Love to you Sarah, Sonny- Tim´s look alike- India and the grandchildren! Donna

Sarah,
I'm sad to hear about Tim. We are both members of a club that neither of us wanted to belong to:(
Jim and Tim were occasionally mistaken for each other. They both loved the water and their families and we were sure lucky to have been married to such good guys.
I hope to see you around the hood.

Tim was one of my first band mates in the 7th grade. We spent a lot of great moments with guitars in our hands and singing our brains out in the Hardiman's garage. We wrote songs together and played the hits of the day from the radio. At a SBS reunion he spoke with great pride of his son who is a tremendous drummer. Now that I am retired, I had hoped to reconnect but c'est la vie...there never seems to be enough time.....Many Blessings brother! You are missed.

I surfed with Tim for decades and called him a friend since 1967 .we lived 1 house apart on 47th ave for the wild years after high school and spent countless hours at Kelly´s with him and surfed the Hollister Ranch numerous times together. Great guy always and a phenomenal athlete. We´ll have brunch on the other side brother.

Sarah, Sonny, & India, my deepest sympathies.

Tim & I worked side by side for 31 years. Both of us SF natives and the same age. With our close friendship, we talked and shared a lot, becoming confidants. He was a gentle soul in a He-Man's body. A great athlete of baseball & basketball, and yet, a better surfer. He never sought competitions, recognition, or the limelight. He just surfed in the background on his terms.

He loved his family, his dogs & the ocean.

So Tim, get on that knee board and stay in the tube, until the Good Lord spits you through the Gates of Heaven!

I'll miss you Tim-o...until we meet again.
