Walter McGregor Obituary

Walter "Mac" McGregor Died on Saturday, July 28th. Mac, 84, lived on the Peninsula where he enjoyed gardening and traveled with daughter, Bonnie McGregor and son-in-law, Rich Chambers. Mac enjoyed helping son, Walt and daughter-in-law, Mary work on projects for their country home in Lake County. Decks and outbuildings have the stamp of Mac. Retirement years were kicked off by the long awaited birth of his only grandchild, MacKenzie Stuart. She was a bright light in Mac's life. A 1939 Mission High School graduate, Mac married his school sweetheart Mary Gonzales. Their 56-year marriage endured until Mary's death in 1999. Although heartbroken, Mac remained positive, enjoying his last years with new canine companion Sammy. Mac is also survived by his beloved sister Jean Fitzgerald. Their son, Walt A. McGregor, was born prior to Mac's departure for WWII. As part of the Army Signal Core, Mac landed at Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1944. In the days that followed, he became part of the infamous 90th Division, seeing action in the seminal WWII battles, including the Battle of Bulge. A decorated veteran, Mac returned to his wife and son in San Francisco. Daughter, Bonnie arrived in 1949 and learned her love of gardening from her dad. For 30+ years, Mac worked for the MUNI at the Geneva Barn. Prior to MUNI, he was the used car manager at Cadillac on Van Ness Avenue. A lifelong hunter and outdoorsman, his hunting and camping expeditions were legend. Deer hunting in the Trinity Alps and Elko, Nevada were frequent. His was a full life, well lived; he was a man of principle and character who lived independently until his brief illness. A life celebration will be held at his daughter's home, 240 Menlo Oaks Drive, Menlo Park 94025 on Saturday, August 11th at 11am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to VFW where Mac and Mary gave for 50 years. REDWOOD CHAPEL (650) 369-5537
