William Hawes Obituary

Lt. William Lee Hawes

Bill died peacefully on May 20, 2015 in Berkeley, California at the age of 83.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife and high school sweetheart, Katherine Gray Hawes of Berkeley, son Alan (Jennifer), daughter Nancy (Kent), Katherine's children Carlos (Ellen), Miguel (Maricela), Gabriela (Danny), and Kyle, 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Bill was born on March 11, 1932 in Jamaica Plains, NY. His & Kathy's love story was one for the ages. They went steady as teens in Stockton, lost touch, but destiny reunited them 44 years later.
A graduate of Lake Forest College, Bill served in the Navy on the USS John A. Bole, and was also a medic. In all ways, Bill was an officer and a gentleman.
A memorial service with military honors is scheduled for June 6, 2015 at 2PM at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 1823 9th St. in Berkeley.

To my aunt and all my cousins: while I only got to meet Bill a few times, he was clearly a wonderful man. He was kind, patient, brave, and generous, and I loved his sense of humor. I am so sorry I will not be able to join you for his memorial service, but my kids and I will be out of the country. We send you all hugs and wishes for comfort. Love, Mary
