Mr Favela was my math teacher at Sparks Jr High. He was a remarkable teacher who always cared about his students. He was definitely a father figure and will forever have a special place in my heart. I became a flagtwirler at LPHS becauae he always talked about his daughter Rosie being one and how proud that made him. Rest in peace Mr. Favela. God Bless You Sir.

We will miss you Uncle Joe! You and Aunt Angie always added "class" to every family event. And true to your profession as a teacher, you were always teaching us something, whether it was how to eat and exercise, or how to play tennis, or simply how to live life fully. Thank you for serving your country so valiantly and so nobly. We are forever indebted to you and the many men and women who sacrificed immeasurably. We love you always.

My deepest condolences to Mr. Favela's family. I was one of his students for 7th and 8th grade at Sparks Jr. High School. I have fond memories of Mr. Favela and enjoyed being in his class. I remember how he passed his time in class while we would be doing our math problems by reading the dictionary. He was an educator that continued his own education. Bravo, Mr. Favela. May you rest in peace.

My Way Or No Way The Final Chapter
I have a story that I want you to know...
It's about a guy and his name is Joe.
He gives advice to anyone who'll listen
And they'll agree if it's within reason.
He wants people to hear what he has to say
But he'll say it in his own way.
He has his diets and his power drinks,
Muffins and salad dressings and whatever is good so he thinks. Don't mess with his circle and don't forget his routine.
He turns off the phone
Oh don't call before four and wake up the king.
He joined the army in 1943 and became a paratrooper in Normandy. He worked in a hospital and was known as Coffee Joe.
He was a musician, a grinder and finally a teacher, as you know. And that was the perfect job for him.
And do you know the reason?
He could talk and talk and the kids had to listen.
He likes to help people whenever he can
And that's very rare, very generous because he really does care.
He married his wife, Angie, in a whirlwind wedding.
And she was the best thing he ever was getting.
She listens and goes along with whatever he does
She's the kindest and most patient wife there ever was.
He retired in Las Vegas and turned it upside down
The town hasn't been the same since he decided to stick around. You'll never forget a great guy named Joe
And all the things he had to say
But like Frank Sinatra (his favorite singer)
Joe did many things
But he did it his way!
Written for Joseph Favela by Margaret C. Angulo 2007
Added to on Aug. 24th 2013 on their 70th Wedding Anniversary
And now it's their 70th anniversary And they've come a long way
And things have changed
And as Sinatra would say...
It's not just that they did it But they both did it
And they did it their way!
Added to on Feb.19th 2015 for his Memorial Feb. 21st 2015
This is not a sad ending of this poem
Just because Joe has gone away.
He's still watching and helping us
And he'll keep on doing it, but he'll still do it his way.

I had the great pleasure of working with Joe Favela as a fellow teacher at Sparks from 1970 until his retirement. I always respected his professional demeanor and his love for his students. He was an excellent role model for the children of the neighborhood and clearly had an impact on them. He also had an impact on me as I was a smoker (in those days we could smoke in the staff lounge), and he, as a former smoker, would tell me at least once a week that I should quit. Well, he would be happy to know that his message stayed with me and I finally stopped smoking in 1993. Thanks, Joe, for all that you did during your lifetime...you will be missed.

Born on August 27, 1921 in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico and immigrated to the United States in April 1924 with his mother, brother and sister settling in Phoenix, AZ where he was raised. Education completed, he pursued a career in California with his wife, in the quest of the American dream and raise a family. Taking various jobs along the way he finally settled into a career in teaching. He and his beloved wife Angie, raised four children Fernando, Armando (deceased), Ricardo and Rose. Joe and Angie enjoyed a 27 year second honeymoon in Las Vegas where they spent many good times together over the decades dancing, dining, concert and games of chance during the hey days of Vegas. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Angelita, sons Fernando and Rick and daughter Rose, his sister, Mary Knowlton, six grandchildren any many nephews, nieces, cousins, in-laws and friends. Well done my good and faithful servant. It should be our desire to hear those words when Our Lord calls our name. There is no doubt in my mind they were spoken to Mr. Favela. Many lives were changed because of this wonderful man. You didn't go through his Math class at Sparks Jr. High and not learn something about life and arithmetic. He wanted every kid to succeed, even the ones that set off the stink bombs on test days. Thank You Mrs. Favela, Fernando, Ricky, and Rose for sharing him all those years. I saw him the end of June at my Dads funeral, he still looked great. It meant a lot to see him there. May the Lord bless all of you and comfort you.

Condolences. I was not lucky enough to be one of his students and was in the class next to him at Sparks Middle school in 84/85 and I always was impressed by the way he was with his class. Sturn and polite, propper and conservitave. I wished at that time I was in his class because he tought them to behave and not horse around. My class was out of controll. Only the smart kids got in his class and made the grade. He was a great roll modle to us all. Thank you for many years of service to the kids of my generation.

We love him and will miss his sought after wisdom that only comes from a life well lived. We loved our casino adventures under his tutelage and got a kick out of his notoriety among the various staffs of his favorite Las Vegas haunts. He made it fun... and always educational! Our condolences to his loving and supportive family and most especially to our beloved Aunt Angie.

Sending all my love to my Nina Angie, Fernando, Rick, Rosie and the grandkids. Nino Joe was a teacher. He never stopped teaching me and all our family. He never stopped leading by example, in love and life. His service to our country in WWII was inspiring and made us so proud. But his love for my Nina Angie, his kids and his grandkids will live on. My hope is that time will heal us all and levee all those happy memories behind to keep us going.

I have fond memories of Mr. Favela teaching math at Sparks Jr. High. I did not have him as a teacher, but his class was next to a class I had. Whistling with one's fingers was a big thing during 7th grade. I learned every way I could to whistle with my fingers. One day while whistling in the hallway, he politely told me young ladies don't whistle. Not having a father in the home, and no real strong male figures in my life, it struck me profoundly. One he cared enough to let me know, and I did want to be considered a lady. I still can whistle with my fingers, and my students often want me to teach them. I use it when necessary to get my students attention. He was a fine man, with a wonderful family, and his son was my math tutor during high school. His wife was a prominent figure in the office at La Puente High School. His touched many lives including mine, and I know he is missed by many, especially his wonderful family. May you find peace with all the memories you have. Many a students' life was touched by his being a great teacher and wonderful man.

Even though it was very late in his long and memorable life, how fortunate we were in August of 2013 to be able to gather family and friends in Las Vegas to celebrate his and his wife's Angie's 70th wedding anniversary. The occasion gave us an opportunity to present a narrative covering his service during WW II and to honor him with a certificate authenticating the installment of a memorial brick in his memory in the entryway of the new European Theater of Operations "Road to Berlin" building addition to the WW II Museum in New Orleans. We shared all of this with the historian of the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment Association website and he posted the information and photos on the organization's website. Please go to www.508pir.org and type "Joseph Favela" into the search engine to find out more, much more about this man who lived life to the fullest . . . Uncle Joe, we'll miss you.
