Philip Guidry Obituary

Coach Philip Paul Guidry

BOSSIER CITY, LA- Coach Philip Guidry, loving father, husband, uncle, coach and teacher passed away after a courageous fight against a variety of lengthy illnesses on February 7, 2008. He had turned 58 on February 2nd.

Services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, February 10, 2008 at Rose-Neath's Bossier Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Gary Hanberry, assisted by Father Pike Thomas and Rev. Miles Holladay. Interment will follow in Holly Springs Cemetery, Martin, LA. Visitation will be Friday, February 8, 2008 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Bossier City, LA.

Philip lived a simple, yet fulfilling life. Having helped raise a nephew and two sons he was so proud of, he proceeded to nurture thousands of young people throughout his teaching of math and throughout his coaching of various sports.

Coach Guidry taught math, especially geometry with an avid affection and coached his teams with a true passion for 35 years. Philip loved his family, his teams, LSU football, and life in general. "Geaux Tigers" meant everything to him.

Originally from Larose, LA, Philip spent most of his beloved life in Northwest LA, including Coushatta, Minden and most recently Bossier City. He was teased for his Cajun French having a Northwest LA accent.

After graduating from LSU in Baton Rouge, he began his 35 year teaching and coaching career. He loved going to work everyday and had hopes after retiring of returning someday.

Coach will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Antoine and Louise Guidry; his older brothers, Jimmy Guidry, Jake Guidry, Sr., Carroll "Butch" Guidry and a special brother-in-law, E.J. Quatrevingt.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Debbie; two sons, Silas Guidry and Caleb Guidry; daughter-in-law, Christy Guidry; brother, Jesse Guidry and wife Loretta; sisters, Patsy Quatrevingt, Catherine Ougel and husband Kippy; sister-in-law, Rhoda Bethard and husband Robert; in-laws, Milton and Tommie Sue Forrest and a host of nieces and nephews.

Honoring Philip as pallbearers will be Don Bihm, Scott Carraway, Barry Plunkett, Troy Guidry, Jared Guidry, Marlon Guidry, Barry Guidry, Ray Spruill, and Frank Trammel. Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Albright and the coaching staffs of Benton High School and Plain Dealing High School.

A special thanks is sent to all of Philip's doctors, nurses, aides, friends, and former students who strived to make his life better. Special thanks also goes to our friends at the PD Clinic. Philip's family would like to especially thank Karen and Miles Holladay for their help, love and support.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the American Diabetes Association, the Kidney Foundation of Louisiana, the American Heart Association, or any school of your choice. Rose-Neath Funeral Home

Aunt Debbie, Caleb, Silas, and Christy: I want to express my deepest sympathy for all of you. I know how sad I am feeling and I know it must be so much worse for you. I can't even begin to tell you what my Uncle Phil meant to me. He was not only my uncle but like a second dad to me and a good friend also. I will never forget all of the great memories I had with him. He liked to tease me but in a loving way like when he called me a "preschool dropout" because I cried and quit after two days. He said no matter what I accomplished in life, I would always be a preschool dropout. That always made me laugh. Or the times when he teased me about going to sleep so early when yall would call me at night. Some of the fondest memories of my entire childhood are of the weeks Barry and I would go spend vacationing in North La. in the summers. Yall took us in just like we were your own kids. And finally of course I will never forget all the years of tailgating with all of you. I will miss him so much and I know you will too. I take comfort in that fact that I know he is with Gran now and they will watch the Tigers along with us from up above. Take care and I know we will keep in touch. I love all of you.

Aunt Debbie,
I have so many wonderful memories of Uncle Phil, but the one that comes to mind is of him making fun of me not wearing the correct color shirt to a LSU game this past year. Of course it was a gold game and I had a purple shirt on. I am so sorry that Travis and I were not able to make the funeral, but please know that you and the boys are in our prayers.

Dear Debbie, Caleb, and Silas--My heart aches for you. The memory of those Saturdays when you tailgated at LSU with Donna and her family and I joined you have stuck with me over the years. I know that Philip has everyone in heaven laughing, and that he has the very best view for watching LSU games from now to the end of time. With love, Scott Carson

Guidry Family
Phillip provided me with many wonderful memories. I thank God I was able to know him. He could always make me laugh and I always made him laugh. It was never dull when we were around each other. He was always there to help me when I was finishing my +30. In fact I owe a portion of it to him. Without his help I would not be where I am today. He was always willing to help whenever he could. He even took time with my daughter weekly to help her with her math in middle school. Thank you for the many stories we shared together. Those memories will not be forgotton. To Debbie,Silas, and Caleb ,Phillip will be missed but he will never be forgotton. May God bless you and your family.

Coach Guidry taught both of our children at Benton High, but played a crucial role in helping our son become involved in Benton High activities through the sport they both loved, basketball. You will never be forgotten. Our prayers and condolences to the family.

When I think of Coach Guidry, I can't help but think of "The Montrose Express" or "The Grawood Special." I am not sure how he thought them up but it sure was fun trying to make them work. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Debbie, Caleb, and Silas,
It's hard to believe we lost Dale and Phil within a month of each other. I can only imagine the time they are having now. I bet it is SO loud up there from the laughter and jokes. I don't think I ever saw Philip when he wasn't smiling and laughing. His good mood was contagious. He was a great man. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. Love, Bethany

Uncle Phil was always so focused on his family and always had a smile on face. Spending time with him last year was really nice. He showed off all of his LSU prizes. He was so proud of his school. You will be a tiger fan surely missed. But now Gran has a LSU fan in heaven with her to cheer for the Tigers on Saturday nights.
Luv you and give a big hug to Gran

I knew Philip since our college days at LSU. We shared an apartment for a year there. He was a great guy, with a great grin. And a good bouree player! Phil never met a stranger. I saw him some years ago at the Top 24 and we took back up immediately even though we had not seen one another in many years. He will be missed.
