Richard Mitchell Obituary

Richard "Karl" Mitchell

Richard "Karl" Mitchell - that would be "Karl with a K - it sounds better" he liked to say - left us suddenly Friday, July 19, 2013. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, July 22, at Osborn Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23, at St. Joseph Church. Officiating will be Father Peter Mangum, Father Karl Daigle and Father Thomas Elavunkal will con-celebrate. Graveside services will follow at Forest Park Cemetery - East.

Karl was born in Baltimore, Maryland on September 4, 1964, and was a resident of Shreveport for 25 years. He was a Citadel man, graduating from the Military College of South Carolina in 1986. He was a member of St. Joseph Parish.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Thomas and Carolyn Mitchell, his brother Bobby, and his nephews Joel Mitchell and Adam Stroumpos. He is survived by his wife of 25 loving years, Ourania Mitchell, two sons, Brooks Karl Mitchell and Ian Reese Mitchell, one daughter, Valentina Mary Mitchell; sisters, Michelle Montgomery and husband, Steve, Dolores Slater and husband, Matthew; brother, Stephen Mitchell and wife, Robin; brothers-in-law, George Stroumpos and wife, Theresa, Robert Stroumpos, Jim Zepp and wife, Elizabeth, Bo Craven and wife, Kim; sister-in-law, Diane Frieberger and husband, Ernst. He was fun Uncle Karl to nephews, Jordan, Brigham, Vitus, Lenny, and Riley, and nieces, Beth, Kelsey, Shelby, Alex, Zoe, Toula, Georgia, Cecilia, Gracie, Lindsay, and Olivia. His parents-in-law, Hannelore and Louie Craven, and Johnnie and Paula Stroumpos loved him as a son. Whenever the family chips were down, someone would invariably come up with "But we have Karl!" He is also survived by his beloved dog, Phoebe, "The Wonder-lab".

Pallbearers will be his beloved sons Brooks and Ian, his brother Stephen Mitchell, and dear friends Archer Frierson, Michael Pabst, and Don Friday.

Coach's passion was lacrosse. His passing brings heavy hearts to all those who knew him, lightened by the knowledge that his legacy will be carried on by the young men he helped mold into warriors. As a coach, he challenged his players to be the best they could be; as teammates, students, sons and as individuals. He would say, "You are all unique, just like everyone else." He never asked anyone to do more than they were capable of, always finding ways to motivate his players, and those around him, to realize they were capable of more than they thought. He lived the lessons that the game of lacrosse had taught him - to honor the Creator and to train warriors, and shared these lessons with us all. He challenged us to be strong mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Coach Mitchell only asked three things: "Show up on time ready to play; pay attention and ask questions; and, always hustle and never give up."

Coach was responsible for introducing the game of lacrosse to Northwest Louisiana. In 1995 he was the coach for the St. Paul's club team that played the first high school lacrosse game in Shreveport. A few years after that he helped Loyola start their team and in 2001 started the Byrd Lacrosse program. Karl Mitchell was always looking for ways to give back to the game that had given him so much. In 2011, when one of his former players, Rob Reeves, a member of Seal Team 6, was killed in Afghanistan, Karl set in motion the One Team-One Fight lacrosse tournament to honor our fallen warriors. Today we must find a way to honor him, for he would have wanted us to carry on, albeit man-down.

Karl served his country as a B-52 navigator. He served his church as a Sunday school teacher and as a leader in the Engaged Ministry at St. Joseph Church. He served hundreds of young athletes as a coach, which was above all else for him a ministry - he coached to "honor the Creator". But more than any, he served his family as a model of generosity, humility, strength and the sweetest true love we will ever know. Karl gave with both hands.

If you would like to do something to honor his memory - to the boys he coached - "Give back to the game." Others, in lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Joseph Catholic School.

Karl, "Cheers".

Oh my friend Nia, if we were to know this day was so soon to come, it seems that we could have or would have done something differently. Yet knowing you and Karl, with a K, has been nothing short of a blessing in my life. To have journeyed vicariously on your road to Valentina, to see the love that you both have for your children, to have shared time in your tiny Broadmoor home, is truly nothing short of a true gift. How my heart is breaking for you all. Karl was simply too fine a man for this world to be here for long. He was a very blessed man to have you, and he knew it. Much love Nia.

COACH KARL

Coach, friend, leader, biggest fan.
There aren't enough words to describe what you've meant to us these
years. You've been by our side through thick and thin. Whether its a hug to congratulate,Or to wipe away the tears. You've brought us strength when we were weak,You've given us courage when we felt meek.
Always pushing us to do our best,To never give up until we've beaten the rest.
You taught us how to be a team,And to strive for our goals,No matter how
impossible they seem.
We've been pushed, yelled at, preached at, too,
But the more that this happened, the more we grew.
We will carry you with us for the rest of our lives,
Hearing that voice
encouraging us to overcome any strife.
It's hard to say good-bye, but we want you to know,
how thankful we are for that friend we call Coach.

Coach Karl,You will be missed each and every day. You will always in our hearts.WE LOVE YOU.
Please save us a spot on your LAX team in heaven.
This is not a goodbye, its a until we meet again....

With a roar of the engines and a puff of black smoke, off we go into the wild blue yonder...

As a fellow Citadel alumni and B-52 navigator who played lacrosse with him when he first brought the sport to Shreveport, I was truly shocked when I heard the news. Although we had lost touch following several Air Force moves, I remember him fondly as a great man, patriot, father, coach and entertaining friend who will be deeply missed. Our prayers and best wishes go to Nia and family during these extremely difficult times. God bless and comfort you. Mike (Citadel Class of '85), Meg and family

I am lost for words. Karl Mitchell will be deeply missed by many. My deepest sympathies to Nia and the children; Brooks, Ian and Valentina. Karl left his footprint in countless people's lives… personally, in business and certainly in the sport of lacrosse. Karl never lost sight of his purposes in serving God, his country and his family.

I was one of the original members of the Red River LAX Club that Karl started. Ultimately (because of Karl) LAX exploded throughout the state and region. It wasn't just a sport to Karl, although it was a lot of fun for him. Instead, it was a mechanism to build character in players… especially at the high school level.

Karl's LAX seed grew dramatically throughout the state of Louisiana. So much so that my neighbor's kids (here in Baton Rouge) recently broke out my window with a stray goal shot from a backyard LAX game. My first thought was… “Karl”.

I got to know Karl on a family level too. Our lives were somewhat in parallel because of the age of our kids. Karl made our Saturday LAX practice a somewhat “family” thing… in that we Dads took our kids to practice with us (while all the Moms got to sleep in). We set all the kids up on the tennis courts at Youree Jr.HS with their breakfast Happy Meals, roller blades, Big Wheels and other various toys all while we played LAX on the field below.

I remember one Saturday LAX practice when none of the Barksdale guys showed up. The next Saturday we all gave them a hard time for their “no show”, but we all knew that “duty had called” in the Gulf War (of course none of them could talk about it). It was one of those moments in life that you realized that you were living in the very freedom that the guy standing next to you put his life on the line for.

Again, my deepest sympathies to Nia and the children; Brooks, Ian and Valentina… and all the people that Karl has touched along the way. May God rest his soul and bring peace and comfort to all the family and friends.

I would like to express my deepest sympathy to the family. I was Karl's "Computer Guy" for 7 years and also he was a fellow Air Force comrade so we had many conversations about our service to our country. I was fortunate to see him last week at his office, and always it was a pleasure to see him. Karl, I will truly miss you as I know your family and friends will. See you in heaven, Brother and "Hand Salute" my friend.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Richard Karl Mitchell our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Karl. And to Karl it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country while serving as a B-52 Navigator in the U.S. Air Force. Karl, we commend you for your honorable service. You are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,261 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion and the 233 veterans of VFW Post 2238 in Shreveport, Louisiana, we extend our sympathies and our condolences to Karl's family and loved ones.
