One of the best Officers I have had the pleasure to work with. We had some great times working DWI together. He will be missed but not forgotten. Always could cheer up a group or room. RIP Brother

My prayers and thoughts are with Tom's family at this time. Tom was a very dedicated and professional police officer who loved the job he did and the citizens he protected. He was a pleasure to be around and to work with because of his professionalism. He will truly be missed.

I met tom years ago when he pulled me over. I told him the truth about why I was speeding and he laughed and said he couldnt believe that I told it at my detriment. He let me off with a warning while still laughing ! He became a friend and always laughed when he saw me. Tough guy, with a big heart! My friend!!!!

Sorry to hear. I worked with Tom back in the 90s at Shreveport PD. He was one of my Sergeants. He was one of the best supervisors! He treated you like a friend and not just like another coworker. He offered you help and assistance when needed and wasnt afraid to get into the mix with you. He was definitely an asset to the City of Shreveport and Marine Corp. Rest easy my friend and may God bless your family.

Some called him Nam(Vietnam)Tom but I called him my FTO(Field Training Officer) and partner. When I landed back home in Sport from San Diego PD, I joined the Sport PD, went through the academy and during my second phase of training was assigned to Tom as my FTO. We worked graveyard in The Grove and when the calls for service subsided, usually around 0200 hrs, Tom and I hit the Circle K at 70th and Linwood for a hot dog and coffee. We talked about our tours in SE Asia. Of course we all have stories we could go on and on about, but there are some people who impact our lives who we dont forget. Thanks Tom for the many memories with SPD. Tom was serious when it came to LE. Someone else should tell the story of how graveyard officers staged a hit and run scene around Toms car, using discarded fender parts from car care. Tom fell for it and was really, really angry. Especially at us once he found out. It was one of the best pranks ever! Miss You Brother

My condolences to Medina, Doug, and family. I knew Tommy at North Caddo High especially from the band. I have to say he was my first high school crush. He was very kind and had the nicest blonde hair. Rest in Peace Tommy Self.

Tom will truly be missed...I never looked at him as a step dad but as a father as he was always there to give me advice and keep me on the rright path. No matter what he always had been there for me and I truly love him for tthat. Even tho he has passed...the memories with him will live on forever...the times fishing and four wheeling with him or the times we had our crawfish boils...I will never forget these memories...watch over us down here...love you Tom!!

Sgt. Self was one of my first supervisors at SPD. He was a good leader and truly cared about the officers he was in charge of. (He always had a great story to tell). I hate to hear of his passing. Praying for his families comfort at this time.

So sorry for your loss, he was a great guy. I rode as his partner several times back in the early 90's when I was an aux. police. He will be missed. Jeff "Hacksaw" Reynolds
