Brendan P. McCahill

1938 - 2022

Husband, Father & Grandfather, 'A Quiet Man With A Big Heart' Brendan, a native Staten Islander, was born on September 17, 1938 and was raised in New Brighton. He eventually settled in Westerleigh in 1968 after his marriage to his beloved wife of 53 years, Dianne E Thompson. Graduating from McKee H.S. he went into the U.S. Army and served from 1955-1958 with an honorable discharge. Brendan worked for the Department of Sanitation in Manhattan and Staten Island, fondly known as Mac, for 30 years retiring in 2000. Upon retiring, he enjoyed doing carpentry work, gardening, watching quiz shows and playing cards. He treasured spending time with his granddaughter Brianne, whom he always called his Little Princess. He also loved his little grand puppy, Daisy, who he enjoyed playing with. He belonged to the City Dept. of Sanitation Retirees Assoc. and was a member of the Community Mayors, a group of retired city workers who assisted handicapped children at special events throughout the year. Also belonged to AARP and American Legion, Post 277, Watkins Kellett. His favorite sports teams were the NY Giants and NY Yankees. A quiet man who possessed a big heart and was always ready to help anyone he could, will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was the Mayor of his block. He treasured spending time with family and friends. Brendan was a parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Church. Brendan is survived by his loving wife Dianne, his daughter Tracie Gonzalez (Jim) and granddaughter Brianne. He is also survived by his sisters Lorraine Sullivan (Dennis), Eileen Kavanagh (John), sister-in-laws Doris and Mary McCahill. Brendan was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Eileen McCahill and his brothers Donald and Charles. Brendan is also survived by his cousin Ethna Martin, several cousins in Ireland, and by many beloved nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at Harmon Funeral home on Thursday evening from 6:30-8:30 and Friday 2-4 and 7-9. Mass of Christian Burial will be from Blessed Sacrament Church at 10 am on Saturday August 13 followed by interment at Oceanview Cemetery immediately following. In lieu of flowers, donations in Brendans name can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
