Arthur Chatelain Obituary

1926 - 2012

A 57 year resident of Granada Hills, California, Arthur Lee Chatelain, age 86, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2012 with his wife and children by his side. The beloved husband of Jeannette for 64 years and father to Susan Warren (Larry), William Chatelain ( Laura), Nancy Chatelain and Janice Hanauer (Steve), grandfather to 10 and great-grandfather to 12. He is also survived by his sister, Donna Nelson of Reno Nevada and brother, Donald Chatelain of Portland Oregon.

Born April 7, 1926 in Hollywood, California - the son of Ruth and Arthur B Chatelain, Art developed a love for "old" Hollywood studios, exposed to the film industry through his father's employment with 20th Century Fox. Hollywood may have beckoned, but Art never took this love further than acting in the local community theatre.

He served our country in the Naval Air Corps during WWII. When Art was not working multiple jobs to support his young family, he squeezed in time to play beach volleyball at Zuma Beach and teach ballroom dancing with his wife Jeannette.

Professionally he was a gifted salesman primarily in the wholesale lumber industry. After retiring in 1988 from lumber sales he went to work for his daughter Jan and son-in-law Steve at Steve's Valencia Florist for another 20 years. During this time he was also a professional card dealer for casino party companies and enjoyed going to Laughlin, Nevada with his family.

If there was a true joy for Art it would be the outdoors, especially wherever a hiking trail beckoned. His favorite was the Cougar Crest Trail at Big Bear Lake. He dreamed that he would one day trek farther along the Pacific Crest Trail.

We will be celebrating Art's life with a memorial 11a.m. on Saturday, June 9th, at Grace Baptist Church, 22833 Copper Hill Road, Santa Clarita. We were fortunate to secure the outdoor amphitheatre for the memorial, a place he delivered flowers to and often said how beautiful it was. Reception to follow at the Granada Hills Woman's Club on White Oak in Granada Hills.

As in the Hollywood westerns, Art has ridden off into the sunset while we hear the sounds of a guitar playing his favorite song "You are my Sunshine".
