Russell J. Dowell
MODESTO - Russell J. Dowell, 93, of Modesto passed away Thursday morning, February 24, 2011 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. He was born September 13, 1917 in Atterberry the son of Leroy and Susan Sapp Dowell. He married Gwendolyn Bell on December 24, 1938 in Petersburg and she preceded him in death on February 5, 2008.
He is survived by one son, Ken (wife, Karen) Dowell of Redmon; one daughter, Sandy (husband, Bill) McKinney of Denton, TX; 8 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one half- sister, Bonnie Carter of Springfield and one step-sister, Sissy Hewitt of Springfield. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred Bast and Eula Bell.
Mr. Dowell farmed in the Petersburg area and later near Modesto until his retirement. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was the oldest member of the Modest Baptist Church in Modesto and was a Southern Baptist Deacon for over 50 years. He enjoyed woodworking and sharing what he created with family and friends. He loved his family, friends and community and will be missed by all who knew him.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at the Modesto Baptist Church in Modesto with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery near Modesto. The family will meet friends from 5-7 on Friday at Stults-Neece-Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Palmyra. Memorials are suggested to the Modesto Baptist Church. Ken, Sandy, and family...So sad for you today when I saw Russell's obit. I'm sure that he is doing great right now though even though you are missing him terribly. I bet your Mom is really glad to see him as are my Mom and Dad. What a great reunion! May God's peace be with you as you go through this difficult time.
