MARK HANDY Obituary

Mark Chester Handy, age 59, of Anacortes passed away Monday, November 22, 2010 at University Hospital in Seattle after a brave and valiant struggle with brain tumors and cancer that lasted over a decade.

Mark was born December 20, 1950 to Chester and Ethel (Curtis) Handy in Marysville, California.

He excelled in sports, scoring many points as Place Kicker on the Marysville High School football team.

Mark's love of adventure led him north to Alaska where he worked for many years in the fishing industry, as a tour operator for Princess Cruises and a favorite amongst the locals as a bartender at the historic Red Dog Saloon in Juneau.

In 1992 Mark and his wife Elizabeth (Taylor) Handy moved back to her former home in the Northwest with their two sons.

Mark worked in Anacortes as a carpenter and flooring installer until disabled by his illness. Despite his own struggles, Mark helped many who were down and out by providing them with a place to stay until they could get back on their feet.

He was an active member of the Anacortes Elks Club.

Mark is survived by his daughter Caroline of California; two sons, Ryan and Derek Handy of Anacortes; and brothers John and Jeffery Handy in California.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother James Handy.

Mark was provided with loving care for many months before God called him home by Elizabeth, Ryan and Derek. Mark left those who loved him with an unprecedented example of the power of the human spirit, the will to survive and despite the odds, the struggle to endure. Mark gave true meaning to the term never give up. He never did.

Graveside services will be held Friday, December 10th, 2010 at 12:00 noon, Fern Hill Cemetery, Anacortes.

I'm very sorry to hear about Mark's passing. Mark was my "dream man" when I was in college at Yuba and Chico. I worked with his mother, at The Fashion while I was going to Yuba College. It has been years since I've seen or heard from him but still hold fond memories of him. May he rest in peace.

Mark was like a brother to me all through our High School days. But we went back further in our lives. I have memories of him on his Dad's farm.
We milked the cows together and fought like brother and sister.
I know his fight to live was great! He loved his children. The boys were the best thing that happened to him.
I will miss him but he will forever remain in my heart.
With sincere thoughts,
Debi Leri Donsker
