Myrtle Sumpter Obituary

Myrtle O. Sumpter, 90, a longtime Sedro-Woolley resident, passed away on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at the Life Care Center of Skagit Valley in Sedro-Woolley.

She was born on December 4, 1916 in Port Orchard, WA, the daughter of Oliver & Leona (Gray) Jones, an was raised and attended school in Port Orchard.

She was united in marriage to Paul Sumpter in Wenatchee, WA on October 8, 1940 and they made their home in Tacoma until settling in Sedro-Woolley in 1948.

Myrtle worked as a sales clerk for the J.C. Penney store in Sedro-Woolley for many years.

She was a member or the Skytopia and Skagit Valley Granges, the Northwest Territorial Daughters of Washington and the Trinity United Presbyterian Church. She also volunteered time at the Sedro-Woolley Museum and at the United General Hospital Guild Gift Shop.

Mytrle is survived by her son, Kenneth R. Sumpter of Belfair, WA and her daughter, Paulette Cassal and her husband, Ken of Mount Vernon, WA; 2 grandchildren, Kathryn Clinkenbeard and Bill Graham; 9 great-grandchildren, Chrystal, Richard, Ross & Tanner Blankers, Justin Garavell, Arisa & McKenna O'Lexey, Devan Graham and Harley Miller; a sister, Mildred Ewing of Moses Lake, WA; a brother, Robert Jones of San Lorenzo, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul in 1967; 3 brothers, Gordon, Lonnie & Byron Jones; and 2 sisters, Geraldine James and Luella Givens.

Memorials are suggested to the United General Hospital Guild, 2000 Hospital Dr., Sedro-Woolley, WA 98284.

Graveside Services will be held on Tuesday, February 20, 2007 at 2:00 PM at the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in La Conner with Pastor Wendy Tingley of the Trinity United Presbyterian Church officiating.

Services are under the direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.

I remember great Auntie Myrnie. She was so fun and full of life. She was truly a Jones which means she possessed great tenacity, intelligence and a great work ethic. I remember meeting someone at a new job and they said they were from Sedro Woolley and I said I had a great aunt Myrtle that lived there. She said "That wouldn't happen to be Myrtle from JC Penney would it?" Well , of course it was. She was so well known and loved. I will miss her and pass my condolences on to her family.
