Scott Sutherland Obituary

Mount Vernon - Scott Craig Sutherland of Mount Vernon, passed away peacefully at home on April 9, 2022 at the age of 66. He was born April 15, 1955 in Bellingham, WA to Jack and Barbara Sutherland.

On July 28, 1979, Scott married Jennifer Hoekstra in Mount Vernon.

Scott attended school in Mount Vernon and graduated as a Bulldog in 1973, where lifelong friendships were made with many of his class mates.

Scott worked for 39 years with the City of Mount Vernon as the public works solid waste division manager.

Scott spent every day creating meaningful memories with his grandchildren, family and friends. From coaching, to camping, and family ski trips, Scott instilled his love of the outdoors in all of us. He continued his friendships through card nights, golf, hiking, and his infamous bike club the R.A.T. "race against time" riders.

He was well versed in all cowboy movies. He mastered the art of woodworking in his garage and collected many treasures on his junking adventures. He had a love for the bag pipes and the Highland games.

Scott was such an inspiration in every aspect of his life. Cancer did not define him, he defined cancer. He made this journey very easy on all of us. It was never about him.

Scott is survived by his wife, Jennifer of 42 years; daughters Kelsey (Jeremiah) Nyman, Katelyn (Chris) Zachmeyer and son Kevin; grandchildren Harrison and Kenna Zachmeyer, Sean and Valerie Nyman; his mother Barbara Sutherland; Sisters Sindi (Dave) Moe, Kay (Marty) Lopez, brother Darrin Sutherland; mother-in-law Lillian Hoekstra. He also leaves behind numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and great friends.

He was preceded in death by his father Jack Sutherland, father-in-law Ben Hoekstra, and brother-in-law Brad Hoekstra.

A special thanks to Dr. Kojouri and his team at Cancer Care and Skagit Valley Hospital for the outstanding care he received.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at 1pm at First Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon.

It's such a short space for such a special man. I admire Scott's balance in his life- family, faith, friendships and generosity. He valued fairness and morality and the only times I saw him upset was when he witnessed actions that crossed these boundaries. He had principles and I greatly respected him for that. He inspired me to have a full, balanced life, using energy for the important, meaningful things in life, just as he has done these last 6 years. I'm so happy to have known Scott and his wonderful family, and I cherish the many memories I've been lucky enough to experience. Such as the time when we were paid a visit by the Mount Vernon Citizen Patrol while we had lighters in both of our hands, just as we were about ready to light another round of 4th of July fireworks in the front of his house. Miss you! Jeff Worrell

Scott always impressed me with his creative vision. Whenever I visit their home, there would be a new contribution from Scott. Whether it was a garden ornament he designed out of scrap wood, a piece of antique furniture that he repurposed with paint and details, painted cabinets, etc....his signature is everywhere. I loved to see what he would create next. I am blessed that my home has something he made as well. I will miss his smile.

I remember the blonde boy who I attended confirmation with. We attended different elementary and Jr High Schools but once a week we saw each other growing up as young teenagers. He always seemed so smart and had answers to all of Pastor Schumacher´s questions. We ran in different circles but knew one another through Christ. I´m so sorry you have lost your son, brother, father, grandfather and friend. Look at your memories of youth and know he is made whole in the arms of the Lord.

Scott, you will be dearly missed. I am proud to be part of your R.A.T. Rider Bike Club. You will always be our club president and our inspiration to "race against time".

Goodbye Scott...thanks for the lesson! Fullbacks race at end of freshman football...loser drags in the tackling dummies. Figured I won and slowed down 2 steps early...Scott didn't. "Quitters drag in the dummies". I never thanked him....but I never quit again.....

My Mother used to say there are two kinds of people in this world. Those that brighten a room when they walk in and those that brighten a room when they walk out. Scott was one of those that made a room fill with such an intense feeling of love and friendship. We will all miss that positive energy he shared until the very end.
