John Matthew Shine, 73, of Anacortes, Washington, and Sonoma, CA, passed away suddenly after a short illness on June 18th, 2025 in Seattle, Washington, surrounded by family and friends.
He was born to John F. "Jack" and Rita Shine on December 31, 1951.
John grew up in San Francisco. He attended Saint Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco where he played football, garnering All-League honor, and SRJC. A graduate of the San Francisco Police Academy, John became a police officer for SFPD, retiring as a mounted policeman.
He was later employed by Kohlberg, Kravis, and Roberts, a private equity firm.
Deeply proud of his Irish roots, he was a beloved and engaged family man. From coaching Little League, cooking for "Hot Dog Day" at St. Francis School, or teaching his great-nephew to drive, John lived out his dedication to his family with a quick wit and a bright smile.
John was a gifted storyteller with a passion for travel (even walking the Camino) who loved to regale others with tales of his escapades. John always had a project- be it raising Arabian horses, building a home and horse boarding facility, racing fast cars (many first place finishes), or moving to the Pacific Northwest with aspirations to fly. John is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Barbara FitzMaurice, daughter Rose, son Eamon (Sydney), four grandchildren, Brantley, Declan, Lainey and Riggs, sister Francis Weiner (Brian) and beloved extended family including, nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.
A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m., August 15 at St. Francis Solano Catholic Church in Sonoma.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Wounded Warrior Project and Sonoma Mentoring Alliance.
