Larry Nelson Putnam, age 70, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan passed away early Tuesday morning, April 2, 2019, at his home.
Larry was born on February 21, 1949, in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Nelson and Shirley (DeShone) Putnam. He was raised in Florida but moved back to Saginaw for his high school years and graduated from MacArthur High School with the class of 1967. Larry served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War on the USS Tutuila. He worked for City Disposal Garbage, a company that was started by his grandfather in Saginaw. He was a member of the Saginaw Rotary Club and Sheriff Posse. On March 24, 1973, Larry married Sandra Bennett in Saginaw and in 1979 they moved to Barbeau. For 30 years, they owned and operated the Island View Resort.
In recent years, Larry was the manager and FBO of Sanderson Field here in Sault Ste. Marie. He was a flight instructor and active with the Young Eagles. Larry was a member of the Soo Pilots Association, Lions Club, and the Elks.
Larry is survived by his wife: Sandra Putnam; his daughter: Jean Putnam of Sault Ste. Marie, MI; his sister: Cheryl (John Rethman) Putnam of Saginaw, MI; two nephews, and a niece.
According to Larry's wishes, no public services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to Hospice of the EUP or the Soo Pilots Association.
