Dorothy Spencer Obituary

MICHIGAN CITY - Mother Dorothy Gene Spencer was taken into the arms of Jesus on the evening of Tuesday, December 28, 2010, at the hour of 9:30 p.m., at Saint Anthony's Hospital, Michigan City, Indiana. Life began for Dorothy in Blaine, MS on August 18, 1948 when she was born to Ezell and Christine (Tillman) Roberts Sr. The family relocated from Blaine, MS to Michigan City, IN where she attended and graduated from Elston High School. She furthered her education at Northwestern College, Dowagiac, MI. Following 30 years of employment, Mother Spencer retired from Head Start as a teacher in 2002. She also worked 15 years for Gateway Factory. Mother Spencer was a faithful member of Vision to Victory Ministries under the leadership of her son, Pastor Rodney Spencer. She served on the Mothers Board, drove the church van and previously taught Sunday school and was Usher Board president. Prior to son's pastorship, she was a member of All Nations COGIC, Michigan City, Indiana under Pastor Robert Hurt. Among her favorite things to do were working hard, attending church and bowling. Loved ones who survive to carry on the legacy of Mother Spencer include her children, Missionary Sonji (Bryant) Gillespie of Macon, Mississippi, Pastor Rodney (Lyzell) Spencer, Tanya Miller and Teresa (Rhea) Hillard, all of Michigan City, Indiana; grandchildren, Nastassia Spencer, Laquita Manns, Brelyon Spencer, Bianca` Spencer, Asyia Mitchell, Roderic` Spencer, Zyshonne Baker, Nefertiti Spencer, Savannah Gillespie, Makayla Gillespie, Bryanna Gillespie and Nevaeh Hillard; great-grandchildren, Myron Spencer, Dante` Spencer and Aubree Mitchell; her mother, Christine (Tillman) Roberts of Michigan City; siblings, Ezell (Mary) Roberts Jr., Vickie (Peter) Fleming and Viola Roberts (Sylvester), along with other relatives, her church family and friends. Mother Spencer was predeceased by three children, Ricky Spencer, Tony Spencer and Oprie Spencer; and a brother, Sylvester Roberts Sr.; her father, Ezell Roberts Sr.; maternal grandparents, George and Zealyer Tillman; and paternal grandparents, Sylvester and Francis Roberts. A glorious home going celebration will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, January 3, 2011 at Greater Powerhouse COGIC, Michigan City, Indiana with Pastor Rodney Spencer, officiating. Interment will follow in Swan Lake Cemetery, Michigan City. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service.
