SOUTH BEND - George Mattens, 78, of Friendship Village in Kalamazoo, Michigan, formerly of South Bend, IN, passed away on September 16, 2011, at Borgess Medical Center. George was born on October 1, 1932, in South Bend, Indiana, the son of the late Julien and Oscarina (DeMeulenaere) Mattens. George was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force. He worked for Rayco Industries. He loved fishing, horse racing, and playing the lottery. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia (Kearney) Mattens, and by a brother, Maurice Mattens. George is survived by two nephews, Roger (Carol) Mattens of Richland, Michigan, and David (Diane) Mattens of Freeland, Washington; two nieces, Marcia (John) Stevens of Plainwell, Michigan, and Valerie (Russ) Knapp of Edwardsburg, Michigan; 11 great-nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Virginia Mattens-Molenda of Granger, Indiana. Cremation has taken place. Private interment of cremains will be held at Highland Cemetery in South Bend, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Friends Fund at Friendship Village, 1400 N. Drake Road, Kalamazoo, MI 49006. Arrangements by Parchment Redmond Funeral Home, 2300 East G.
