Joseph Szucs Obituary

SOUTH BEND - Joseph G. Szucs, 86, passed away on Saturday, September 13, 2008, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center surrounded by his wife and children. Born October 20, 1921, in South Bend, Indiana, he was the oldest son of the late Geza and Anna Szucs. Joe is survived by his best sister, Mrs. Richard (Ann) Aranowski, and his brother, John (Irene) Szucs. Joe was preceded in death by his brother, Edward (Marie) Szucs. Celebrating 65 years together, Joe married Evelyn Theresa Danch on August 28, 1943, in South Bend, Indiana, in Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Judie (Tom) Geyer. Surviving are his children, Joe (Sally) Szucs Jr., Mike (Cindy) Szucs, Cyndi (Denny) Walz and Patrick (Sharon) Szucs. Joe was the proud grandpa of 12 grandchildren, Mrs. Bobby (Debbi) Johnson of South Bend, Joey Szucs of South Bend, Mrs. Jon (Kristen) Cruthers of Bartlett, IL, Cary Szucs of Indianapolis, Ashley Szucs of Granger, Lindsey Dempsey of Noblesville, Mrs. Bryan (Jenna) Long of Brownsburg, Curtis Szucs of Indianapolis, Kelsey Szucs of Lafayette, Chris Geyer of Osceola, Eric Geyer of Bloomington and Libby Eyestone of Mishawaka. Joe was also the proud great-grandpa to nine great-grandchildren. Joe graduated from Washington High School in 1939. In 1938 he received the Most Valuable Player, All Conference, All Twin City, and All State awards, as tackle for the W.H.S. Panthers football team. He was inducted into the Washington High School Hall of Fame for his outstanding football contributions. Joe received a football scholarship to the University of Iowa. Joe was employed for the Studebaker Corporation for 21 years, and retired in 1984 from the Bendix Corporation. Joe was involved in numerous clubs and organizations throughout his lifetime. He was a Cub Master for Pack #333, an umpire for little league baseball, was involved in the Bendix Management Club and the Hungarian Democratic Club. Joe enjoyed Notre Dame football, the Cubs, following Ryan Newman's career, spending the winter in Fort Myers, Florida, and quality time with his family and grandchildren. He made sure to teach them to never give less than 110%. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church and School, where Joe was a lifetime parishioner. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, in Our Lady of Hungary Church, 829 W. Calvert Street. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call a half hour prior to services in the church. Zahoran Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
