DONALD R. CHAFIN Sr.

DONALD R. CHAFIN SR. passed away September 8, 2018, in Baptist Health Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. Affectionately known during his childhood years as "Pretty Boy," Don was the son of the late Tom C. Chafin and Hazel Marie Chafin, prominent residents of Mingo County, West Virginia. Don's father was a two-term Sheriff of Mingo County. Don was preceded in death by his wife, Toby Ann Varney Chafin, and a son, Donald Ray Chafin II, and his sister, Jeanne Chafin Persinger (Howard M. Persinger Jr.). Don is survived by his son, Thomas Christopher Chafin of Lexington, Kentucky, and his two grandsons, Jacob Curtis Chafin and Nicholas Dugan Chafin. Don is also survived by two brothers, Andrew Chafin of Johnson City, Tennessee, and Senator H. Truman Chafin of Williamson, West Virginia, and his sister, Georgia Griffith (Kelly Griffith) of Charleston, West Virginia. Don was raised in the small community of Newtown, West Virginia, and graduated from Matewan High School with the class of 1955 and attended Marshall University after serving four years in the United States Navy. He and Toby relocated to Lexington, Kentucky, in 2003 to live out their retirements watching their grandchildren grow up. Don will be buried alongside Toby at Camp Nelson Cemetery in Nicholasville, Kentucky, and a graveside memorial service will be held on the 13th day of September 2018 at 10 a.m. at the cemetery.
