After having delivered a bronze sculpture of Mrs Simplot and three performing arts kids to Boise, Mr. Simplot said " come up to my office for your check". We started to talk fishing and Mr. Simplot offered to let my buddy Brian and I fish a section of Silver Creek that he owned. What a GREAT time we had!!

I will never forget Jack accepting an invitation to speak at the Glenns Ferry High School graduation ceremony.
He told it like it is but leads by example with kindness to anyone deserving. We grew potatoes for Jack about 27 years. I always thought that Jack's word was his bond. I will always have good memories of Jack Simplot and the companies he built.

Jack Simplot's life and mine intersected about 65 years ago, over a serving of potatoes. My Great Uncle, Fred R McCabe, and Jack Simplot were friends back in the 30's and 40's, maybe even before that time, because Fred was sheep ranching and buying and selling real estate in the teens and 20s of the 20th century, and he really got around the state of Idaho. Jack was an up and coming entrepreneur about 30 years younger than Fred.
I became aware of Jack Simplot in the early 1940s when Great Uncle Fred came to our home in Boise one day with sample packages of dehydrated potato products for mama to prepare and feed to the family. He told her Jack needed feedback from us. How was the consistency, taste, etc? We all reported to Mama and she gave Fred our report to take to Jack. It must have been a good report. The dehydrated potato product, when properly prepared in mess halls and field kitchens during World War II were a welcome staple. They may have helped the allies to win the war! Thanks for the memories.

I worked for the Caldwell Plant for nearly 20 years and have great memories of the people and the visits from Jack he would come in the back door with his cowboy hat and visit in the lab and of course try some of those fries. He was a good man and generous to others that is lost these days in our country.

Many belated blessings to Esther and family. I knew J.R. as a wonderful horseman/cowboy and animal lover. At McCall, we'd be on his mountain horses riding up these tiny paths along side a huge mountain. Being a Dallas girl, I would ask Jack if it was safe. He'd belly laugh, say "Yes" in his way and proceed to point out all of Idaho's fabulous wildlife that he loved so much. He was such a natural with his animals...a more accomplished and rugged "cowboy" than any in all of Texas!!! Wheather Jack has one cent or more, he and Esther are tops on my list. Farewell Jack. Betcha you've already found your favorite horse and are riding again. God bless. Anonymous

I never got to meet the man but I wish I had. I know from the time I moved to Boise Idaho tell I left I always smiled when I saw that Flag on the hill. I was glad some one cared enough to make sure it flew high and proud no matter the weather and to this day I talk about it so thank you Mr. Simplot and thank you for the smiles you have given me when I think back to my Idaho days. I do miss them and the sight of your flag. My condolences to the whole family. You were one of the lucky families in America to have a caring father like this not only for his own family but for his adopted family of all whom live in Idaho. My prayers go out to you and yours

My sympathy to the family. As a child growing up my mother told so many stories about her childhood spent with Gay and Scott that I felt I knew them as well. My grandmother Gladys Crandell was J.R. Simplot's housekeeper. My mother Sharon has fond memories of J.R. from the way he always greeted her with a hug to how he always made people feel good about themselves. He was a good man who will be missed by all the people he touched, even indirectly.

My condolences to the family and friends of J.R. Simplot. My years in Idaho were made more special by learning of the accomplishments, generosity, and hard work of this great American.
He showed entreprenearship, dedication, respect, and generosity -- all values we can admire. He did much for Idaho and for his country. While not a native, I took a lesson from Mr. Simplot that learning and respecting the great traditions of Idaho are the responsibility of those who live in this great state.

I am Clint Isensee's oldest daughter, Vicki. I have some fond memories of Mr. Simplot and my Dad together. One time in the 70's I met my Dad, Mr. Simplot and a couple other of their friends in Las Vegas. They decided we should go see a show so we went to see Lou Rawls and Tina Turner. I was about 22 years old and thrilled. When the show started it was loud but great. I think they all liked Lou Rawls but when Tina Turner came on, it was too loud and too much and some of them left. Mr. Simplot fell asleep at the table. I loved the show then got lots of chips from everyone to play with in the Casino.
I also remember going to his beautiful home in McCall.
He was a well respected man and friend to my Dad and my deepest sympathies go out to his family.

Over the years we had several opportunities to meet and visit with Mr. Simplot. He couldn't possibly remember us but he did! Or, at least, he made us feel as if he did. I worked for the company for 32 years and attended many dinners where he spoke but the most fun was a rodeo for the Livestock people in 1972 in Norland. He was so much fun. Whe he wanted to change the rules in team roping because he and Mr Basabe missed he said the man who made the gold made the rules. He had a great time with the cowboys then.

He was a humble man. Many of us enjoyed his bright smile and friendly hello when he went for walks with Mrs. Simplot. Not a security man in sight.
Less than two years ago, we saw Mr. and Mrs. Simplot when they strolled through the Ag building at the Western Idaho State Fair. We asked if Mr. Simplot would hold our year-old daughter Rebecca and let us take a picture. He said he would be happy to. What a youthful 97-year-old he was. What a kind gentleman. We miss him and are grateful for his generosity and the example he was to us and our children.

Good bye to an Idaho icon who was larger than life. I remember Mr Simplot coming and speaking at Boise High School and being amused and amazed at his candid self depreciating humor. J.R. Simplot will be remembered as one of the Great Icons of Idaho. He was a special breed of man that comes few and far between. J. R. created unending horizons for many of us here in Idaho and across the globe with a humility that was unparalled.
I never personally met J.R., but my father-in-law worked for him driving truck and hauling potato waste to the feedlots in Grandview. Ken loved working for the Simplot company, and finally reluctantly retired at the age of 72.
I watched from afar the tenderness and care that Esther showed J. R. in his later years. May Esther and the rest of J. R.'s family find peace and comfort in his incredible legacy and his example of what hard work and vision can accomplish. He truly lived the American Dream.

My father, Alvin, worked for Mr. Simplot for 20 years. I remember when my brother and I were 9 years old and Mr. Simplot allowed us to go swimming at his house in McCall. I also remember Mr. Simplot calling our house and asked to speak to my father. I thought it was my Grandpa. I told my mom "It's Grandpa, he wants to talk to dad." My mom answered the phone and Mr. Simplot got a kick out me thinking he was my Grandpa. My mom told me it was Mr. Simplot and said I could call him Grandpa anytime I wanted. Thank you Mr. Simplot for all you have done for Idaho and the lives you touched.

I worked at Crane Creek Country club for 5 years & had the pleasure of Mr. & Mrs. Simplots "company for dinner" Their love and respect for one another shined through always. He was always a joy to watch as he teased the children at the club. He would walk up to the table and ask the kids, "Why are you eating my fries?" Pretty funny! Where does one start when your entire lifetime has been intertwined with one man as has mine with J.R.. My father worked with and for J.R. when I was a youngster and " Uncle" Jack came to our house for dinner on occasions. I too worked for Simplot Western... went on to The College of Idaho, Jack's College, Later was the first manager of J.R.'s "Nyland, Idaho Cattle Feeding operation and took him out in the dead of winter's mud and snow when he wanted to see "his cows," Later was priviledged to go before Gov't agencies and legislatures to represent him and all Idaho Cattlemen as Exec. VP of the Idaho Cattle Association. No greater bussinessman has, in my opinion, except for perhaps my departed father and his good friend Carl Sears, ever lived In the State of Idaho. Farewell "Uncle Jack" God Bless You for all that you have been to so many of us. My consolation to all of the family of the one and only, generous to a fault, J.R. Simplot

Growing up in Idaho it was always a pleasure to read or hear stories about Mr. Simplot. As a child I loved driving up Bogus Basin road and marveled at the estate, and especially the flag that was so proudly flown over head. Even though he and his wife so graciously donated it to the State of Idaho to be used as the Govenor's House it will forever live in my childhood memories as the Simplot home.
The contribution that he and his family have made to this state will go unmatched for another 100 years if ever. A very special legacy that will be respected for generations to come. He was Idaho's Man of the Century. May God Bless and comfort his family and friends during this time of loss.

Spanning three generations several members of my family worked for Mr. Simplot in various operations. My grandmother, Carmen Seal, worked at the Heyburn Plant. A few Aunts and Uncles and my Dad, UDell, also worked either in the Heyburn Plant or in Simplot Trucking operations. My sisters and brother all worked at some time for the organization. Currently my sister Kathy and her husband Chuck work for the family in McCall. The re-occurring theme of their experiences is that he never forgot where he came from and was as sharp as ever in remembering names and stories. Working for Mr. Simplot was an honor for my family. We express our condolences to the Simplot family from our family.

Growing up on a farm and ag business in Declo, ID the legacy of Jack Simplot had a profound impact on me. I was always proud of the fact that he came from Idaho and more specifically from Declo. He always gave me reason to believe that no matter where you start from you can go anywhere with enough good thinking and hard work. He was a hard working and resourceful farm boy that made it big and that has always been an inspiration for me. I met Jack a couple of times and have read his biography(when I started reading " A Billion the Hard Way" I did not put it down until 4:00am when I finished it,). He will always be an inspiration.
Most Sincerely

Wow! What an amazing guy. Growing up in Boise I knew who JR was. 1986 was the first and only time I ever met him. I was hitch-hiking home from Bogus with my friends. A car stopped but only had room for two. I volunteered to wait for the next ride. The very next car in line stopped to pick me up. I remember it well. It was a very plain, grey, Chrysler K station wagon. A nice older man, whom I thought looked familiar, was driving and there was no one else in the car. He was wearing his signature hat. It was a matter of minutes before I realized who he was, JR Simplot! I was about 16 then and I remember the ride like it was yesterday. We talked about many things, including, education. He encouraged me to go to college and told me if I had any trouble getting it to let him know and he would pull some strings! This experience is one of my favorite stories to share. What a great man.
