Constance Leonard Obituary

Constance B. Connie (Cheverie) Leonard, 90, died Tuesday, May 6, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late W. Douglas Leonard. Born and raised in Braintree, she was the daughter of the late Owen and Helen (Rice) Cheverie, and a graduate of Braintree High School. For over thirty years, Connie was a comforting and familiar face working as an admission secretary at the Emergency Room of Brockton Hospital. She had been a resident of Whitman for over fifty years before her move to Bridgewater five years ago. As an active resident of the Whitman community she was a member of the Mothers Club and had served many years as a den mother. She was a longtime communicant of the Holy Ghost Church where she participated in Perpetual Adoration and the church CCD Program. She was also an avid and talented ballroom dancer. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and had successfully raised her three sons alone after the loss of her husband in 1966. In later years her greatest joy came from the time spent helping to raise her cherished grandchildren. She is survived by her loving sons, Mark Leonard and his wife Nancy Persson of Easton, Brian Leonard of Bridgewater and Timothy Leonard and his wife Christine of Hanson; her sister, Brenda Chamberlain and her husband Warren of Holliston; and her sister-in-law, Carmela Cheverie of Abington. She is also survived by her grandchildren, whom she adored, Douglas, Jackson, Scout, and Cooper; as well as her dear friends, Ronni Marshak of Boston and Harry Morse of Quincy; and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Donald, Robert and Paul Cheverie. Her funeral service will be held Friday, May 9, at 8:15 a.m. from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 at the rotary), Whitman, followed by a funeral Mass at 9 a.m. in the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman. Burial will follow in the St. James Cemetery, Whitman. Visiting hours will be held Thursday, May 8, from 5-8 p.m. Donations in her name may be made to the Bridgewater Public Library, 15 South Street, Bridgewater, MA 02324. Brian, Tim and Mark,

I was very saddened to learn so late of your mom's passing, she was a great life long friend to my mom, Lucy Murphy. I can not recount the number of times I called your mom from Seattle and asked her to check on my mother, who was so hard of hearing she often did not answer the phone and left me worried as to whether she had a fall in her home. Connie was an absolute blessing in my mother's life. I always cherished their friendship as did my mom, and always admired the fantastic job she did as a single mom raising her family.

She was truly one of a kind and my sympathies and prayers, however tardy, are with all of you.

Dear Mark, Brian, and Tim, I was sorry to hear about the passing of your Mom. It has been many years since I had seen her but her image is forever in my memories from a time when we were all young boys. I am sure that she left you with a life's worth of great memories and happiness.
With condolences but also fond remembrance,
Jeff Leonard
