Still hard to internalize, gone but never forgotten. There is still a hole in the SC Bar where he stood. Trust his family finds solace in the memories they shared.

Well it has been a year and I still miss your good advice.I sure needed you to help me make some hard decisions. You were so wise and told it like it was. I agreed at times I didn't. I have grabbed my phone a lot to call you and remember you are in heaven now. Your work here was complete. God needed you there. You are not hurting now praise God. Often I catch myself saying "what would Albert tell me to do. Well bye for now and keep your eyes and ears open you will see me one day. Your friend Miss Ellie

I can still hear Albert say " ok Miss Ellie what did you do this time " then next with that big old smile and a bear hug shaking his head laughing. He was such a caring and kind man. I considered him one of my special and loyal friend. I was so glad that God arranged for Albert to come into my life. He helped me in many ways. He would tell it like it was whether you agreed with him or not. I honored his decisions. I often still remember some of our talks and hear that laugh as it was yesterday. I miss him as so much. I find myself still picking up my phone to call as nd ask for his advise. That my friend is what you call one of your best friends. I know you are keeping everyone up there laughing and smiling. One day we will met again

I just learned of your passing, dear, sweet friend. I pray your wife and family are well. I know that they will miss you, as will all who knew you. I will miss our periodic chats and know that you will do your part on the other side to speed things along in the direction we need down here. Give David Turnipseed a hug from me. No doubt, we shall all meet again. Thank you for all you did for the Spartanburg community. May God treat you well and bless and comfort your family.

Albert was a fine gentleman who went out of his way to welcome me, a young lawyer, who came to Spartanburg years ago. He was kind, considerate and a person who built community among all people. The SC Bar, the Spartanburg Bar and his community are all better for his contributions as an attorney and friend.
May his family find comfort in warm memories of Albert.

I will miss my Uncle Joe (Albert). He achieved many things in his life. If he wanted something, he went after it. He was a man that you were proud to say that he was in your family. My uncle had a big heart and he didn’t mind helping anyone. I have many fond memories of the good times we had when we would come from Philadelphia to visit. My sister and I always stayed at his house. You’re at rest now Uncle Joe, but you will forever be in my heart. Love Your Niece.

I am just learning of Albert’s transition . I met him years ago through my brother Tyrone Gilmore, and have known his wife Helen since first grade at Cummings Street School. He was a gentleman and he had character and dignity. May Helen and his family find peace and serenity in the memories of the exemplary life he lived.

I have been a client of Albert for 12 years.
He truly had a heart of gold. I enjoyed his jokes so much but most of all I enjoyed his smile and his hugs. My heart breaks for the Smith family. Albert was an incredibly special man and will be sorely missed.
He always told me - "Ashley you only wear sequins when the sun goes down".
To this day, I carry that with me. May God bless you my sweet friend. Always and forever.

I was a student at Converse College doing an internship at WSPA when I first met Albert. He was a stringer in Columbia whilst he attended law school. He told me to forget about broadcast journalism and he was going to law school for a better life and career. His advice must have resonated with me as I have been a paralegal for over 40 years. Thanks for the advice and RIP sweet prince.

Albert Smith and I studied and graduated from the USC Law School in 1980. He was a force for progress and change having seen and learned so much from his experience in radio and television. Having studied at Wofford I loved that Albert returned to Spartanburg to practice law and help the community. We are all better for having known him and benefitted from his impact on our lives. We pray a full recovery for his wife, Helen. Rest in peace.
