Joseph Brewer Obituary
CHARLOTTE, NC-- Joseph Beaman Brewer, Jr., age 81, of Charlotte, NC, and formerly of Rocky Mount, NC, passed away peacefully on December 17, 2012.
He was born on December 21, 1930 in Rocky Mount. He was the son of the late Joseph Beaman Brewer and Edith Gee Brewer, and brother of the late Elizabeth "Betty" Brewer Chambers. Joe was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Lucy Ann Boddie Brewer, and her brother, Nick Boddie.
He had fond memories of Peter Rabbit Kindergarten. Joe graduated from Rocky Mount High School and from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1953, where he was a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity.
Joe previously served as President of Brewer Paint & Wallpaper, as well as Brewer Foods. In addition, he served as Past President of the Rocky Mount Kiwanis Club and Benvenue Country Club. He also served as Board Chairman of United Federal Savings and Loan, and on the advisory board of People Bank & Trust.
Joe was a member of Edgemont Presbyterian Church, and later of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as elder and deacon. He enjoyed attending Myers Park Presbyterian Church once moving to Charlotte.
He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Sandra Porter Brewer; two daughters, Lee Brewer Garrett of Wrightsville Beach, Lucy Brewer Wheeless and her husband Steve of Wilmington; one son, Joseph Beaman Brewer, III and his wife Virginia of Rocky Mount; and one sister, Judy Bradshaw and her husband Charlie of Spartanburg, SC. Also, he is survived by his grandchildren, Elease, Nick, Brewer and Nathan Garrett; Lucy Ann Wheeless, Libby Wheeless Connor and her husband Paul; JB and Bill Brewer; and also the late Ben Brewer.
In addition, he was beloved by Sandra's children, Alison Thorp and her husband Jimbo, Ashley Burlingame and her husband John, all of Charlotte, and Holmes Davis, IV and his wife Cammy of Dallas, TX. He is also survived by Sandra's grandchildren, Peyton and James Thorp; Marshall, Mary Corbin and Hannah Burlingame; and Holmes, Eliza and Marguerite Davis.
Joe is also survived by Mayo Boddie and his wife Jean; Betsy Boddie and Hank Chambers. He always held a special place in his heart for Mary Wright, James Bellamy and Twain Floyd. He will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends in Rocky Mount, Charlotte and Wrightsville Beach.
There will be a private family burial. A memorial service will be held in Rocky Mount at 11 am on Thursday, December 20, at First Presbyterian Church.
In addition, a celebration of his life will be held in Charlotte at 11 am on Friday, December 21st at Myers Park Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service in Providence Hall.

Judy Bradshaw,
Judy I was sad to read about "Joe Junior's" death. I remember him so fondly. I will never forget the time he posed as a baseball catcher for the Chicago Cubs on one of his visits to Florence. My friends were completely fooled and impressed. I'm not sure you ever knew that story, but it is a great memory for me. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

What a wonderful, loving man who will be greatly missed. My heart just aches for the family and their loss. But I hold such fond, cherished memories of Mr. and Mrs. Brewer having lived next door while growing up. I will keep the family in my prayers, and send lots of love to his children.

Your daddy called my daddy almost every day when during the months he was sick this year before he went to be with the Lord. Now they are all there together along with their friends and parents. Joe and Family, Your father was an extraordinary man who opened his home to all of the kids in the neighborhood back in the 60s and 70s. I remember the putting green in the backyard and the Juke Box upstairs. I always felt safe there and had alot of fun as a bonus. I miss seeing him ride by the club as he would always stop to say hello or wave and flash that great smile. My father loved playing golf and gin rummy with him and always had a kind word to say about him. Our community misses him and I wish you guys the best through this difficult time. Mr. Brewer was a gentleman in business and in his personal life. I worked for Olney Paint Company/Spartanburg and both operations in Greensboro and Rocky Mount were customers for many many years. I also recall the model of the home @ Wrightsville Beach which Joe had in his office...just prior to constuction...and his comment that Lucy Ann had said that she 'wanted a house half way between the Johnny Mercer pier and Station One' so that's where they built their very fine home. I'm sure that it continues to bring enjoyment to the entire family and will for generations to come.

Mr.brewer you were a very dear person . I will miss seeing you at the beach house on your visits to Wrightsville beach . I remember those big hugs you gave me when I would come there. I know your family will miss you terribly . But yet another angel is called home to be with our Lord . My prayers go out to each and everyone of your family members . Mr. Brewer made a lasting impression on my life while I was growing up in Edgemont Presbyterian Church. He is what a role model should be, his impact as a businessman, community and church leader will always be a part of his legacy. I was grateful to know Mr. Brewer.
