Norman Gardner Obituary
Reverend Norman Russ Gardner went home to meet his maker peacefully at Upstate Community Hospice House on Sunday, May 30, 2021 in Landrum, South Carolina at the age of 85.
Reverend Gardner is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, the former June McManus of the home, two sons, Norman Russ Jr. "Rusty" and wife, Ruth of Orange Park, FL and Larry Greer and wife, Laura of St. Augustine, FL; two grandsons, Joshua (Leslie) of Jacksonville, FL and Caleb (Kelly) of Raleigh, NC; two granddaughters, Amber (Kaelyn) and Allison "Alli" of St. Augustine, FL; and four great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents, Greer L. and Gertrude Wino Gardner of New Prospect in Spartanburg County.
Reverend Gardner was born on June 24, 1935 in Spartanburg County. He graduated from Bob Jones University in 1958 and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas in 1962. He pastored ten Southern Baptist Churches in five states during his ministry: Bethel Mission and Colony Forest Mission in Columbia, SC, Montague Baptist Church in Montague, TX, Decatur Avenue Baptist Church in Fort Worth, TX; First Baptist Church of Machesney Park , Rockford, IL, Piedmont Baptist Church in Chesnee, SC, First Baptist Church of Dupo, IL, Trinity Baptist Church in Durham, NC, Croft Baptist Church in Spartanburg, SC, Alice Drive Baptist Church of Sumter, SC, Ridgewood Baptist Church in Orange Park, FL and Goucher Baptist Church in Gaffney, SC.
After retiring from 63 years in the ministry, he and his wife moved to his childhood home in New Prospect Community of Spartanburg County and joined New Prospect Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends from 2:00PM until 3:00PM on Thursday, June 3, 2021 at New Prospect Baptist Church. Funeral services will immediately follow at 3:00PM at the church with Reverend Matthew Bishop, Dr. Bill McManus and Mr. Caleb Gardner officiating. Interment will be in New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Norman had requested that donations be given to the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary Scholarship fund, https://join.swbts.edu/register/?id=017de576-b7e6-4635-a56d-b552811ab696. Please select scholarship under "Designation" and check the box in front of "This gift is in honor or memory of someone".
The family will be at the residence.
