Fred SHAFFER Obituary

December 9, 1937 - May 16, 2025

Fred Shaffer, much loved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to so many, passed away on May 16, 2025, at the age of 87.

Fred was born on December 9, 1937, in Spokane, WA, to Joseph and Freida Shaffer. He grew up with older sister Joan and frequently reminisced of his happy childhood. Summer days were often spent enjoying local lakes with extended family and, as a general rule, a long leash was given for bike ride explorations or other adventures with friends, with some occasional mischief mixed in. After graduating from West Valley High School, Fred enlisted in the Army and was based at Fort Lewis. Following his military service, he enrolled in Columbia Basin Junior College and later returned to Spokane, continuing his education at Whitworth College.

Fred graduated with a degree in Business Administration from Whitworth and during these college years also excelled as an athlete. He was inducted into the Whitworth Heritage Gallery Hall of Fame both individually in track & field, holding the discus record at Whitworth for 50 years and the NAIA record for 16 years, and as a teammate on the undefeated 1960 Football Team that went to the NAIA semi-finals. He had tryouts with the Denver Broncos and British Columbia Lions and was invited to train with the premier Los Angeles (SoCal) Striders Track Club.

Most importantly, it was at Whitworth where Fred met and fell in love with his future wife, Phyllis Wilmeth. His athletic opportunities throughout their courtship never distracted from his true focus of settling down and establishing a home and family with her in Spokane. They were married on July 6, 1968. They raised three children and shared 53 wonderful years together.

Fred initially worked in sales but an entrepreneur at heart, built a successful car-detailing business, Tire Craft, with dealership accounts throughout Spokane and Northern Idaho. He had an unmatched work ethic and worked tirelessly to provide for his family. He loved all things cars and planes, especially car shows and air shows, and shared these interests with family and friends.

While his athletic and business achievements were impressive, Fred will be remembered most for his character and integrity. His faith was a central part of his life and shaped him into the loving husband, devoted father, doting grandfather, supportive brother and uncle, and trusted friend that he was.

Fred is survived by his sister, Joan (Richard) Dye; children, Matt (Renay), Jennifer, Seth (Hilary); and grandson, Trent. While his family rests in the assurance that his spirit is reunited with his beloved Phyllis and so many extended family and friends in eternal fellowship with Jesus, his earthly presence will be dearly missed.

A private burial service for immediate family will be planned.
