Harold VANNURDEN Obituary

Harold Lloyd Vannurden, 91, of Spokane, Washington, passed away after a brief convalescence on the morning of November 12, 2022. Harold was born on June 15, 1931, in South Haven, Minnesota, to Bernard and Ruth (Converse) Vannurden.

Harold graduated from North Central High School in Spokane, Washington, in 1950. Harold was a Navy veteran, having served in the Korean War on the USS Essex Aircraft Carrier with a rank of MML-3.

Upon returning from Korea, Harold married the love of his life, Wilma Marie (Rand) Vannurden, in 1952. Together they adopted two children, Mark Vannurden (Jana) of Mesa, Arizona, and Sharon King (Delvan Scraper) of Spokane, Washington.

In addition to his military career, Harold worked for and retired from the Dominican Sisters Convent where he enjoyed a career as a Caretaker and Stationary Engineer.

Known fondly as "Old Weird Harold" Harold's humor and kindness were legendary and those who knew him had many stories to tell. He was known to be a funny, kind, gentle soul who was quick to strike up a conversation and share a story or joke with whomever he crossed paths with. He was an avid hunter, rockhound, and gardener. Two of Harold's favorite activities included square dancing and traveling the world with his companion, Goldenia Banks of Pullman, Washington.

In addition to being survived by his children, Sharon and Mark, Harold is survived by his brother, Donald Vannurden (Audrey); grandson, Eric Kingson (Liese), and great-grandchildren, Phinney (12), Quinnlan (10), and Radley (7) Kingson.

In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma (1996); brother-in-law, Ernie Abitz (2001), and sister-in-law, Opal Abitz (2021).

Harold's funeral will be held on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at Riplinger Funeral Home, 4305 North Division Street, at 10:30 am, and a graveside service immediately following at Spokane Memorial Gardens, 5909 Cheney Spokane Road, at 12:30 pm.

Harold helped me learn how to round dance. He was a very patient partner, and never got upset if I made a mistake. He had a great sense of humor and I appreciated having him for a friend. He helped me feel welcome when I was new to dancing. He will be missed!

Harold was there at the square dances when ever a gal needed needed a partner! Meet him while I was taking lessons back in the 1970's, he always had a smile and fun stories. His fun will surely be missed by everyone in the square dance community.

Sorry for your loss. Many great, funny memories dancing with "Old weird Harold." Hope I can find some fun pics I did with Harold. He's a soul I am so happy I was able to get to know.
