Hughena House Obituary

HOUSE, Hughena Elizabeth
Born February 11, 1916 Died March 21, 2012

Graveside Service with 21-Gun Salute -- Friday, March 30, 2012 at 2pm, Fairview Cemetery in Rockford, WA with memorial service to follow on Saturday, March, 31, 2012 at 11am at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, 1926 West Chelan, Spokane.

Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and cousin went to be with the Lord on March 21, 2012 -- the first day of spring to start her new beginning in Heaven.

Hughena was born February 11, 1916 to Charles and Bessie Hecht. She was born and raised in Rockford, WA. Her grandfather was one of the first founders of Rockford and homesteaded there. The farm has been in the family for about 123 years. Hughena has a Washington State Pioneer Certificate that certifies that the family settled here in November 11, 1889. She attended Rockford School as well as Whitworth College, University of Washington and Cheney Normal. She taught school in Washington at Onalaska, Newport, Vanport and Carson as well Logan School here in Spokane. In Carson, her class was one of the very first to see a sneak preview of The Wizard of Oz. She was a WAVES in WWII. She worked in the photographic science lab in Anacostia, NY. She worked with top secret films and could not utter a word to any one about them. Hughena was the best mother in the world, award winning cook, seamstress, painter and poet. She loved working with her husband, Bob House, who she married on November 16, 1946. Together they owned and operated the R.L. House Studios at 2408 West NW Boulevard here in Spokane.

Hughena leaves behind daughter and son-in-law, Sherri and Kelly Rhoads; daughter, Roberta Parkay; granddaughter, Anna and Toby Gallier; brother, Vernon and Teresa Hecht; sister, Lois Claassen; brother-in-law Clarence and Gen House; and many nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by husband, Robert House and son, Richard House

Hughena took great pride in her 56 years of membership at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church where she was a Deacon and awarded Mother of the Year. She had a beautiful singing voice and new all of the old time hymns by heart.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, 1926 West Chelan, Spokane, WA 99205.

I met Hughena (and Bob) about 45 years ago--I was in first grade and was so lucky when I met a girl named Sherri House. My father was in the Air Force and stationed in Greenland at the time. My mother, 3 brothers, sister, and I all lived in a one bedroom house that my grandparents owned in Spokane. Sherri became my best friend. We had so much fun together. Hughena always welcomed me into their home and treated me as part of the family. She was a wonderful, giving, and loving person. Beautiful qualities that my dear friend Sherri also has. My thoughts and prayers go out to Hughena's family.

The short time you were here in Spokane gave many opportunities for you to reconnect to family, friends, and meet new friends. In the conversations we had, you showed me a man with a lot of passion in life. I wish we could have had you here a little longer, but I know that where you are is the greatest place of all. God Bless you Vince, and God Bless your family.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you. I will miss Hughie, she was such a doll. I didn't know her for very long, but she left an impression, and sweet memories of her in my heart. God Bless you all, and God Bless Hughena.

We really enjoyed having you live with us this past year. The highlight was when you asked Jesus into your life and ask for forgiveness of your sins. It was an honor and a privilege for Harlee and I to sit at your bedside when you took your last breath. I loved you like a brother Vince and will miss you!

May you rest in peace Vince, although we only knew you for a short time you became a dear and great friend of ours. You will be greatly missed but never forgotten

After many years since our h.s. days at N.C. - I'm glad to have visited him not long ago to see his digitally restored prints of vintage posters from Japan, China, etc. - with his sister, my friend Bobbi and bring him his favorite berry pie. What a talented, creative and gifted artists (House) family. If you would like to enjoy these dated museum pieces - can see them and read his bio. with his pictures - please ask his family for his Old Orient Museum website

Dear House Family: It is so hard to say goodbye to a Mother, and especially one so gentle and loving as your Mom has been. Sherri and Bobbi and Vincent were so precious to Hughena and she was so honored by all of you, with your loving attention, your care of her and your daily visits with her as she moved to the Sunshine Gardens. We all hug you for your caring spirit and your loving ways. She is reunited with her husband, Bob now and with Vincent they will do God's work from another venue. May the goodness that you showered her with return to bless each of you as you say your goodbyes to her and Vincent this week.
It was such a pleasure to visit her and pray with her at the S. Gardens!

Our family has wonderful memories of both your Mother and Father as they often took our family photos as well as some business photos for my Dad's company. Both of your parents were gracious and entertaining, always getting the perfect smile in the photo. Healing prayers to you and your family in the days ahead.
