John Mitchell Obituary

John Thomas "J.T." Mitchell, 25, of Lake Charles died Thursday, July 23, 2009.
John Thomas was born in Sulphur and graduated from Sulphur High School in 2002. He was a member of the Sulphur High School Golf Team for four years and a member of the Soccer team for three years. As a freshman, he was the individual 5-A State Golf Champion; and as a junior, was a member of Sulphur High School's State Championship 5-A Golf Team. He was the 13 and 16 year old Gulf States Champion. John Thomas also won the 2001 Louisiana State Junior Amateur Championship, the 2006 Sulphur City Golf Championship, and was a four time Country Club Junior Champion.
After graduation, John Thomas attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette on a golf Scholarship. He was employed at the Lake Charles Country Club.
His love for golf and enthusiasm for teaching and willingness to help will always be remembered by all of his young golfers.
John Thomas is survived by his parents, James "Jim" and Rebecca "Becky" Black Mitchell of Lake Charles; two sisters, Jamie Ann Mitchell and Katie Beck Mitchell, both of Lake Charles; one brother, Justin Derrick Mitchell of West Monroe, La.; a paternal grandmother, Elsie Mitchell Holstead of West Monroe; a maternal grandmother, Margaret Black of Carlyss; aunts and uncles, Dr. Thomas R. and Dr. Linda G. Mitchell of Laredo, TX, Steve and Ann Black Vallette, and Janet Verret Black; his beloved companion (dog), Dice; and numerous cousins and other family members.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Thomas Warren Mitchell and Thomas W. Black; and his uncle, Steve Black.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Baptist Church. The Reverends Steve James and Ronnie Burke will officiate. Burial will be in Mimosa Pines South in Sulphur, LA. Visitation was at Johnson Funeral Home on Saturday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and continues from 1:30 p.m. until the start of the service at the church on Sunday.
Pallbearers for the service will be Barney Bridges, Jimmy Foret, John Henry Faulk, Justin Mitchell, Jackson Mitchell, and Scott Bailey.
