Laura STUART Obituary

January 24, 1932 - June 25, 2025

Glendale - Laura was born on a cold January morning in Tonasket, Washington. Most of her early years were in various locations in the Okanogan Valley, and she graduated from Bremerton High School. She moved to Spokane and Kinman Business University, where she met John Stuart. They were both in a speechwriting competition, Laura took first place, and John took second place. Laura figured out early on that 'he was the one' and they dated for about a year and a half before their wedding. After marrying, Laura worked a series of different jobs, in one case modeling with appliances for Tubb's Electric, one of her employers and the ads appeared in the paper. She worked for a doctor and others in those early years. After about five years, a series of three boys started showing up. As the boys grew up, Laura went back to work and one of her positions was managing the Bookroom at Salk Junior High School, eventually moving into the main office. When a position opened, she moved to North Central High School and worked in both the old building and the new. During these years, she took art classes, using a torch to cut and weld metal, learned to paint, and took classes to learn German, the language her mother spoke until she was seven years old. Laura was very fond of her collection of elephants, wood, glass, and other materials, likely as no two of them were the same, much like her friends, and they were all special to her. Laura and John started Scottish Country Dancing and attended many Scottish Highland Games around the Pacific Northwest and St. Andrews Society events, as well as traveling across the country, into Canada and Internationally for trips and dancing, including a two-week dancing trip to Japan. Laura is survived by sons, David (Chris), Robert (Geri) and Gary (Kim); with six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service for Laura Stuart will be on 16 August 2025, at 11:00 AM, at Covenant United Methodist Church, 15515 Gleneden, Spokane, WA 99208.

I have known Laura since I was a child as she and John were good friends of my parents, Bill and Carol Schmadeka. She and John were my washington parents, and I loved her dearly. My memory of her was that until I was 40 years old, she would send me birthday money. She had a quick wit and would always have the last word to make me laugh. I will miss you, Mom.
