Mildred BEITZEL Obituary

October 25, 1922 - September 27, 2024

The memorial service for Mildred Isabelle Beitzel will be held at Spangle Community Christian Church, October 26, at 1:00pm. A salad and dessert potluck reception, for the many people whose lives were touched by Mildred throughout her 101 years, will be held in the church basement immediately following the memorial.

Mildred (King) Beitzel went to be with her Lord Jesus and into the presence of her Father God early September 27, four weeks before her 102nd birthday, with her family nearby.

Mildred and her siblings, George, Phillip, and Shirley, were born at their farm outside of Solomon, Kansas. She graduated valedictorian at Solomon High School and completed her BA in Ed at Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma. Her first year of teaching was with second graders in eastern Colorado, at a relocation camp for Japanese American citizens during World War II. During that time, she became engaged to Granville Edward Beitzel, and with the help of friends who donated their sugar ration cards, Granville and Mildred celebrated their marriage, June 17, 1945, with a wedding cake and loving vows that lasted 65 years, until Granville was killed in a car accident.

Struggling with periodic, crippling bouts of lupus, Mildred nevertheless enjoyed life to the fullest. As a pastor's wife in Pittsburg, KS, Brooklyn, IN, and Palouse, Garfield, and Colfax, WA, she was an important part of the counseling and teaching ministry touching hearts and minds of all ages everywhere they lived.

In 1955, Mildred began teaching in the Palouse Elementary School, finding many creative ways to help "her kids" interact with the subject at hand.

She was a highly respected, deeply loved wife and mother, pastor's wife, teacher, prayer warrior, friend, and mentor, and devoted follower of Jesus Christ. Her life aim was to live for Him and to direct others to Him. She was strong but gentle, generous, a servant-leader, a woman of vision and of intellectual curiosity, a person of highest integrity, obedient to God in every way. She was indeed rich in ways better than with silver or gold.

Survivors include three daughters, Linda and Michael Chase, Marilyn and Daniel Wear, Eileen and Dennis Shaw, and one son, David and Joanna Beitzel. Also 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

It was a pleasure meeting my dad's cousin (by marriage) Mildred Beitzel in the summer of 1960 - when I was nearing 12 years of age. On a trip to the Pacific Northwest, we stayed at their home near Palouse, Washington - with my grandparents, cousin Mary, and Mildred's mother-in-law Blanche. Although that was 65 years ago, I remember the visit well, the old farmhouse, the hospitality, and the very interesting person that Mildred was. I was to see her just once more - at a family reunion, the following summer in St. Joseph, Missouri. But through contacts with various family member, including one long telephone call from her 25 years ago, I was able to "keep up" with my Beitzel cousins and was always happy to pass the information along to my dad, when he was living. Mildred reached an advanced age and made it that long with only the tender, loving care of family. I know it was a privilege for you to care for her, as we have done for our own parents in recent years. Should a family member see this, my love and best wishes to you all and, again, it was a genuine privilege knowing Mildred.

Mildred was the sweetest soul one could ever have the pleasure of knowing. There is a very special place in heaven for her. God bless.
