News Death Notice

CAREY, Doris Allene of Springfield, Ohio, died peacefully on Tuesday, January 5th, 2010---one week shy of her ninety-third birthday. She was born in Sommerville, Ohio on January 11, 1917, the daughter of Leslie E. and Mabel Eleanor Strait Carey. A proud graduate of Springfield High School, she received her Bachelors degree from Wittenberg University, and was among the first women to receive a Graduates degree from Harvard University. She retired after thirty years of teaching and counseling students in the Springfield, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland school districts. She was a lifelong member of High Street United Methodist Church, a member of and organist for the Order of the Eastern Star, a piano teacher, realtor, member of Wittenbergs a cappella choir, student of civic events, and a member of the American Association of University Women. She is predeceased by her parents and her brother, attorney Norman C. Carey. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mildred Carey (Springfield), nine nieces and nephews: Ann (Dale) McFeatters of Bethesda, Md., Francie Kaufman of Columbus, Oh., Betsy (David) Sherf of Paradise Valley, Ariz., David (Trish) Carey of Asheville, N.C., Marian (John) Nielson of Denver, Colo., Richard (Lisa) Carey of Springfield, Oh., Jennifer (Michael) Bello of Needham, Mass., Daniel (Suzie) Carey of Springfield, Oh., Katie Carey Sweet of Springfield, Oh.; and many great nieces and nephews. She, and her family, were and are very appreciative of the loving care she received from Dr. Marsh, and the great staff at the Legacy at Forest Glen. Thank you. Doris remained proud of her family and her upbringing; and is fondly remembered for the reflection: "No drugs, no alcohol, no sex---Ive been blessed!" Indeed. As was her loving family. "Carey On!" Aunt Doree. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 PM. in the Chapel at Ferncliff Cemetery with Rev. Cary Simonton officiating. The family will receive visitors in the Chapel from 1:30-2 PM. Miss Carey was our neighbor growing up on the East end of Springfield. She was quite an original and unique in her principled ways. I knew her for over forty years and grew to respect and admire her more and more with each passing year. Doris will be sadly missed by me and all whose lives she touched.

She was my guidance counselor at Olive Branch Jr. High School. She was such a kind and gentle soul and truly enjoyed mentoring her students.

l really liked talking to Doris at our Fortnightly Musical Club meetings. She enjoyed the fellowship while being a member.

I feel blessed to have known Miss Carey - she gave me the privilege of calling her "Dorie", only because I had the privilege of helping her out to her car at Collier's Family Restaurant. I am sorry that I couldn't go visit her, for she was a remarkable lady, but my husband was very ill. I always was amazed at how she knew her beloved Springfield. I will keep the family in my thoughts and prayers and her in my heart.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I have been a neighbor of Miss Careys for quite a few years now and I enjoyed talking with her, listening to stories, and helping her with little projects around the house. She was truly a remarkable woman who will be missed by everyone who knew her. I will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers.

I delivered Meals-on-Wheels to Miss Carey. She will be missed. She would play the organ for me once in a while. I offer my condolence to the family even though I didnt meet any of them.
