Karen Lowry Obituary

Karen Lowry
March 9, 2023
Karen M. Lowry, 77, of Jenkintown, PA passed away Thursday, March 9th, 2023 suddenly, at Abington Hospital-Jefferson Health. Karen was born in Stamford, CT on July 8, 1945, a daughter of the late Helen (Wykowski) and Capt. Joseph 'Pat' Markovich, USMM. She was the beloved wife of Dr. Atherton Clark Lowry for 54 years, and loving mother to their two children, Atherton C. M. Lowry and Dr. Suzanne (Lowry) O'Driscoll. She was a member of Immaculate Conception BVM Church in Jenkintown. Karen graduated from Stamford Catholic High School. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy from Fordham University and her Master's Degree in Pharmacology from Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Science. She was a medical research assistant at Jefferson University in Philadelphia, taught organic chemistry at Holy Family College, and was engaged in scientific research for Beacon Research at Arcadia University. She wrote and co-wrote several scientific papers as well as having a patent from her work at Beacon. She later worked as a pharmacist for Abington Hospital. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and travel. She particularly loved spending time with her family, especially as an aunt and godmother. She made the decision to welcome a family from Vietnam into her and her husband's home, and Dinh Nguyen, his wife Tuoi, and his brother Thuc, joined her and Atherton in early 1974, creating a family bond that continues today. Karen is survived by her husband Atherton, and their two children, as well as her youngest brother Joseph J. Markovich, and his wife Faith, and her sister-in-law Patricia Matthews. Karen was predeceased by her parents, as well as her brother Carl R. Matthews, her sister and brother-in-law Jane and William Hollis. Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing from 6 PM to 8 PM on Friday, March 17th, 2023 at the Joseph J. McGoldrick Funeral Home, 507 West Ave. in Jenkintown, PA. I am an old friend of Karen´s from SCHS. We were very good friends. We have reconnected with our old SCHS classmates via daily email over the last few years. Karen was one of the funniest, smartest and most interesting contributors. She was also a great writer besides being a great math and chemistry student. I will miss her greatly. Love to Atherton, Joe and the rest of her family.

Kate was a classmate of mine at SCHS and wrote the best stories of her family daily in our class of 1963 e-mail group. We all loved her so much. I am so sorry. Such a shock.
