Bartholomew O'Brien Obituary
Rev. Bartholomew J. Retired Pastor of St. Mary Our Mother Church in Horseheads, NY Age 89 went to be with the Lord on Friday November 7, 2003 at the Sisters of St. Joseph Mother House in Rochester, NY. Rev. O'Brien was born May 30, 1914 in Waverly, NY, the son of the late William and Abbie Farr O'Brien. After studying at St. Andrew's and St. Bernard's Seminaries in Rochester, NY, he was ordained a priest by the Most Rev. James E. Kearney, D.D. at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Rochester, NY on May 18, 1940. Father O'Brian had always served the Church of the Rochester Diocese, and had been involved in several ministries over and above the usual parish ministries. He served as The Episcopal Vicar in the Diocese of Rochester under The Most Reverend Fulton J. Sheen, D.D., served as Associate Pastor at Holy Rosary Church and St. Patrick's Church in Rochester, NY, St. Peter and Paul's Church in Elmira, NY and served as Pastor for St. Peter and Paul's Church in Elmira, NY and St. Mary Our Mother Church in Horseheads, NY. After retirement he gave retreats, missions, wrote spiritual and inspirational books, and assisted in various parishes. Father O'Brien is pre-deceased by his brothers Edwin, William, J. Paul O'Brien and his sisters Louise Walsh & Mary Donoghue. Survivors include sisters-in-law: Tess O'Brien of Waverly, NY and Mary J. O'Brien of Elmira, NY; several nieces, nephews and cousins including Mary C. Farr of Elmira, NY and a special friend Monsignor Emmett Murphy. Relatives and friends are invited to call at St. Mary Our Mother Church 816 W. Broad St. Horseheads, NY on Tuesday November 11, 2003 from 2-4PM and 6-7:30PM where Father O'Brien will lie in state. An Evening Prayer Service will be held at 7:30PM. Mass of The Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Mary Our Mother Church on Wednesday November 12, 2003 at 10:30AM. Interment will take place in St. Mary Our Mother Cemetery following Mass of The Resurrection. It was Father O'Brien's wish that he be remembered through memorials to St. Mary Our Mother Cemetery c/o of St. Mary Our Mother Church 816 W. Broad St. Horseheads,NY 14845 for the cemetery's beautification and maintenance. Arrangements are entrusted to the Van Buskirk-Lynch Funeral Home in Horseheads, NY.
