Lew Anderson Obituary

NEW YORK (AP) - Lew Anderson, who captivated young baby boomers as the Howdy Doody Show's final Clarabell the Clown, has died at the age of 84.

The musician and actor died Sunday in Hawthorne of complications of prostate cancer, said his son, Christopher Anderson.

Long mute as Clarabell, Anderson broke the clown's silence in the show's final episode in 1960. With trembling lips and a visible tear in his eye, he spoke the show's final words: "Goodbye, kids."

Though Anderson was not the only man to play "Buffalo Bob" Smith's mute sidekick, he was the best, Smith said in his memoir.

With the Peanut Gallery looking on, Anderson used bicycle horns to give yes and no answers. For more expressive moments, he wielded a bottle of seltzer.

The show, which launched in 1947 when televisions were still a novelty, was the first network weekday children's show. Anderson joined "Doodyville," a circus town peopled with puppets and human actors and watched by a Peanut Gallery of kids, in the mid 1950's.

Though his fame as Clarabell followed him throughout his life, Anderson was also a success as a musician and bandleader. In recent years, his All-American Big Band appeared on Friday nights at New York's Birdland jazz club.

Anderson was born in 1922 in Kirkman, Iowa. He started a band while serving in the Navy during World War II and later toured the Midwest with bands before landing in New York.

It was when he joined the Honey Dreamers, a singing group that appeared on radio and early television shows, that he met Smith and became a clown

"Clarabell just fell into his lap," said his stepdaughter, Lorie George.

Anderson followed Bobby Nicholson, who later played Doodyville's J. Cornelius Cobb, into the role. The first to play the mute clown was Bob Keeshan, who later became known as Captain Kangaroo.

Anderson, who lived in South Salem, is survived by his wife, Peggy, two sons, his stepdaughter and five grandchildren.

My Mom spoke fondly of you and your Band Lew
As I remember my mom, stage name:

I am always reaching out to find any recovered music from her era...70s 80s....She sang at Brown's in Catskills...and the Playboy clubs when they were big in NY....
Rita LiVolsi was her given name..and she has since passed.....

Fond memories of Lew and his Clarabell role. A top notch jazz arranger and alto saxophonist. I had the pleasure of meeting him and playing in his big band in Westchester County, New York. Kind gentleman and great inspiration to the kids of Howdy Doody and jazz fans.

I first saw you when a small boy. I would watch you through the window of a nearby service station where I would ride my toy peddle tractor to laugh with you in black and white. The station had a T.V. and we had not gotten one. I dwelt with you and the other members of Buffalo Bobs show. The Indian Princess , Mr Bluster, Howdy Doody and the creature Mr Flubber dub. You were my favorite. You brought love and laughter to a little boy in the country through that screen.
God bless you for all the joy you brought to me all those years ago.Now its my turn to say"Goodbye, Clarabell" and yes theres a tear in my eye.

For Lew...in your role as
Hoody Doody you brought smiles
to children around the world.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

One of my favorite pictures is one that hangs in my office, one that was taken in Flemington with both Lew and Buffalo Bob in costume and myself all sitting in a row with our arms around one another. That picture helps me revisit a time and helps me rekindle a memory of two gentlemen who represented class, kindness and the joy that they brought to others. Lew, you were always accommodating to your fans and I thank you for being so.

That picture is one that will help me cherish the memories I have of you and keep a place for you in my heart. You will never be forgotten!

It has been almost two years since your passing Lewie but it was as a result of those Sunday afternoons at the Wings Club in New York that I was able to get in touch, here in Los Angeles, with your former trombone great Bill Watrous. Hardly a day goes by that somewhere on the Big Band network an arrangement is heard resulting in me saying, "Boy does that sound like Lewie" Even the UCLA Marching Band sounds like Lew Anderson. We had some wonderful times back in the '70's, not only at the Wings Club but at the old Jazz Adventures Friday afternoon program. Then in the '80's it was great to have you perform in Toronto along with Sandra O'Neal at the Terry Fox Memorial and in Oshawa at the "Broadway Comes North" evening. Being introduced to you by Vinnie Dean made life a lot more exciting while living in New York. After moving back to Toronto in '79 you were only a phone call away. Lewie you still are My Main Man.

How does one express the wonderful and joyous laughter you provided me, my brother, and so many of my friends? I don't suppose I can do so adequately ... Yet, I will thank you for making me laugh and for giving me the fondest of childhood memories.

My respects, sir ... To you, your family, and to the indellible mark you have left on this world ... That mark is still alive in all of us who remember you.

Thank you.

My Dearest Husband,

It's been a year and I can't begin to tell you how much I miss you. My life has changed so much without you and I feel lost and scared and don't know how to begin again. The first time I met you you helped me in such a caring way to audition for your chorus, "The Musicommuters". I was scared then and you helped me. I need your help again.

Thank you for being a wonderful father to Halley and Lorie and a thoughtful and kind husband to me. You know we loved you very much.

Your wonderful band plays on, but you are greatly missed by all. You are thought about so much and missed by so many.

I am taking this opportunity to thank so many of you for sharing your loving and thoughtful words about Lew. I appreciate your kindness and I'm greatful for all your memories of Lew. He would be so happy to know that he gave so many people so many hours of joy.

Goodbye my love and please wait for me. I will join you one day and we will be together again. All my love forever, Peggy

Lewie...just a name to most, but it means a lifetime of memories for me. Lewie is what Halley and I called you when we were young, and even before that it was Mr. Anderson. My very first memory of you brings me back to the age of 4 or 5 when I was sitting in your family room watching King Kong.

That was a long time ago and I recall some wonderful stories about you since then that I will never forget…like when you and Mom would take us to a Broadway show and then to the Auto Pub afterwards for dinner, or when you would call the house pretending to be the Easter Bunny, or all of the songs you taught us like the Sheik of Air a Bee and the joke we would always fall for “Adam and Eve and Pinch Me all went out to sea. Adam and Eve were drowned, who do you think was saved?” Inevitably we would answer “Pinch Me” and face the consequences. And how exciting it was when you got to be on Hollywood Squares, and when Halley and I were in the peanut gallery and got to be on television. It was because of your kind and gentle soul that we loved you so much as kids. You really were a clown; the make up was just a prop.

Popcorn…I don’t think a day went by where you didn’t have a bowl of popcorn in front of you watching whatever game or movie happened to be on that day. If it wasn’t popcorn, it would have been ice cream, cheese, or peanuts instead. I have to say the best thing I think you made was your homemade caramel corn. Nothing could compare. Too bad no one wrote the recipe down…I think we’ll all regret it.

Some of the funniest stories I remember about you include year upon year when you would read the untraditional version of “The 12 days of Christmas” or the story about the Chili cook-off. I think the more we heard them over the years the funnier they got because you could never get through the whole thing without stumbling over your laughter no matter how many times you’ve read them. It was your sense of humor that we all loved about you. Even when you were not trying to be funny, you managed to make us laugh. Like when your windshield was stolen out of your car in NYC and you drove around for a week wearing safety goggles to protect your eyes.

Your music was your passion and your life’s work. We loved to listen to it as kids when you would have an outdoor concert, and we would dance around as kids do to…well fun music. We didn’t know what Big Band Jazz was. All we knew was that it was fun and exciting and we couldn’t wait for the next time you played. I love your music even more as an adult and would get to the city as often as I could to listen to you play at the Red Blazer, or Birdland. Your music is contagious, whimsical, fun, energetic, and boy do I love it! Your presence on stage was the heart of your band. A little tap dance, or a pun or two is what made you special beside the fact that you arranged all of the music for over 300 tunes. A talent that will never be matched and a sound that will always be remembered.

These last few months with you have been very special, but also hard. I think because I was the youngest you and I had a special place in each others hearts. You’ve told me that I was your best friend and I will always cherish that. Did I ever tell you that you were mine? Well you are and I love you and I will miss you and think of you everyday and hold you close to my heart.

I know you are gone, but I also know you haven’t left me. So think of me when you write your next song, I hope to hear it one day. And by the way, I figured out what I am supposed to call you. It’s not Mr. Anderson, or Lewie or Lew…it’s Dad. I miss you.
With All My Love
Your Daughter, Lorie

I was not fortunate enough to know Lew. I can see he was a well loved clown. I did very much enjoy him on the howdy doody show. I had bought the entire dvd set just to watch all the fun antics. That and I too am an entertainer always looking to learn more. When I first saw him in that crazy zebra material. My first thought was "What is he thinking! That outfit is a mess". Then I thought "Ahhh, but you can't mistake who he is"

((((Dearest Peggy and Family))))

It's been so long since we've been in touch and just now I googled Lew's name to see if he's still making music in N.Y. and I sadly find he passed last May. Our sincere sympathy to you and your family. Lew was a great talent and a gentle, sweet man - a privilege to know. He was the 'milk of human kindness'. I feel very sad knowing he's gone.... I remember him coming up with his guys to perform at our theater's fundraiser, and us getting together at my sister's after my son passed. I send love and affection to you today and know that Lew will watch over you. He's in the hearts of so many. Remember you were the 'love of his life'.

I guess I am one of Lew's oldest friends and proud to say a member of his "All American" Big Band from the day he started it. All the things I have read in this guest about him I know are from the heart and all right on target. He was a gentleman and he touched the lives of so many people...more than he ever knew. As long as I have known him I never saw him in bad humor or lose his temper even when he had a right to. He was such a fine musican, band leader and arranger and all-around "good guy" that musicians would do anything for him. It was a honor to play for and with him and we all knew it. As I have said often, Lew only had one fault...and it was a big one...he did not know how good he was.

My heartfelt condolences to Lew's family. I will never forget Lew--I didn't know him as Clarabell--to me he was Lew Anderson, the great arranger, band leader and saxophone player. I will always remember the good times on the bandstand. Lew, thanks for everything.

My fondest memories of "Uncle Lew" were not of him as Clarabell. The show was over before I was even born. Lew was a close friend of my parents and I remember always being excited as a child when I heard we would be seeing him because I knew how much fun we would have. I can honestly say I never saw him mad or raise his voice. He was a kind and gentle man who shared his talent with the world and we were honored to have him in our lives. I know how much he will be missed by all those whose lives he touched. Our loss is heaven's gain.

I couldn't believe it when I saw all the messages remembering Lew as Claribel and thanking him for a fond memory from childhood. I knew "Uncle Lew" as one of my parents’ best friends. It’s amazing how everyone who saw him on television had it right. His gentleness and kindness came right through the screen and it was genuine. He was also humble and I believe he never knew how well known he was. I know he's looking down on us saying…”I can’t believe this, don’t make such a big deal!” His is sorely missed and rightfully so. Lew was a gentlemen in every sense of the word.

It was a great time in our lives when children could watch Clarabell the Clown and our parents didn't have to worry about what we were watching, unlike todays shows. I lived in those days and remember the great shows of the 50's and 60's and all of those great people such as Lew are leaving us everyday. We will never forget them and they will always remain in our hearts. Thank you for the good times you gave us Clarabell.

Thanks for the fun, Lew. One of many, I also grew up in Doodyville, everyday at 5PM. Years later, I had the honor or meeting Buffalo Bob when he lived here in Florida. I missed the honor of meeting Lew, and the rest of the cast and crew. I was working at 610-WIOD Miami, on the Larry King Show, and Buffalo Bob was the evenings' guest. Quite a thrill for this adult kid.

Once upon a time, I dated a girl that was in the Peanut Gallery, I know I saw her on the tube, I'm sure I did, she was there, I must have seen her there, I hope.

No one can talk about childrens television and not include Howdy Doody. No one can talk about clowns and not include Clarabell Hornblower. Thanks Lew. Steve Zeigler; [email protected]

One of the very best joys in my life was knowing, working with, and having Lew as a friend. Not only watching him on TV, but while I was co-producing the "Story of Howdy Doody" record album in 1974, as he arranged all the mucic, working with him on a children's TV record for Captain Noah in Philadelphia, and joining Lew as he was the Grand Marshal of the Hatboro Cristmas parade. These were very special times with a wonderful and warm man. So many of us were priveledged to enjoy a smile and a laugh because of Lew. God Bless the Anderson family in their loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. You brought laughter, joy and love into many homes.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...

but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.

I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.

Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.

Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.

That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,

God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.

As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.

I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.

There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.

And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.

And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.

God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years

because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.

But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.

Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.

But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.

But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.

I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;

but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...

that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,

then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."

And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,

knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,

just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;

I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,

remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

After all these years, who knows why there are some things you never forget. I can still remember Clarabells final and only words on the Howdy Doody Show, he said in a whisper..."Good Bye Kids"....now it's our turn to say goodbye to you...Good Bye Lew, and thanks for all those beautiful memories.

Dear Clarabell,

Thanks for making me laugh while I waited for what seemed like an eternity for my Mom to get home from work. You are what a clown is supposed to be like.

A soft and hearty NAMASTE to all who were touched as was I by the beautiful presence of this great man. Giving souls such as his are sadly absent from today's video madness. We who are priviledged to have witnessed those dear times are sad of another Icon gone but never forgotten.

Clarabell and childhoods -

- As long as we all still have our childhoods (childhood memories) we always will still be able to visualize Clarabell with his happy smiling face (as we try to anticipate his next move) honking his _Yes_ and _No_ horns, and then squirting his seltzer bottle - making us laugh! hahaha

Thank you Clarabell for entertaining and making a nation of millions of kids laugh! So many years of fun and laughter - Wow!

Both the older generation and todays children now can still enjoy Clarabell by putting them tapes in the vcr (or cd's in a cd player) and have endless honk honks (toots) and seltzer squirts and still wonder what Clarabell with his smile is up to next - hahaha.

I have always wanted to really feel Clarabells's squirting seltzer come right out of the tv screen and get me wet! hahaha

He will be missed dearly by his family and his viewing fans (the peanut gallery of all us peanuts).

I am a member of The Doodyville Historical Society.

Yes - the funniest clown.

Thank you Clarabell for giving me happiness in my childhood since age 5 - that happiness still continues!

I promise I will never forget you Clarabell - a very special mentor to me - Thanks!

Shalom (bye and peace) Clarabell.

My heart goes out to the Anderson Family. I had the honor of being one of the Mystery Puppeteers that performed at the Doodyville Historical Society Convention in 2004. It was a tremendous pleasure to work alongside Lew.

His son, Chris, said that Lew enjoyed the Doodyville Times Newsletters and more specifically, the January 2006 cover design that depicted Clarabell in a hospital bed giving the nurse a hard time about taking his medicine. It was drawn specifically for Lew and I thought it would make him smile. It's the least I could do for someone who made me smile so many years.

I will truly miss him. My love to you all.

With a tear in his eyes and trembling lips Lew 'CLARABELL' Anderson once said "GOODBYE KIDS". With a tear in our eyes and trembling lips it is now our turn to say "GOODBYE LEW 'CLARABELL' ANDERSON".

I too was a baby boomer and remember Buffalo Bob, Howdy Doody and Clarabell coming to Springfield, MA and entertaining all of the neighborhood, in front of Flebotte's Market in the North End. We lived right across the street and I probably was the first kid there.

I loved Clarabell as well as many others.

May he rest in peace and make every one up in heaven laugh.

HOWARD JONES

THANK YOU LOU FOR MAKING THIS BABY BOOMERS CHILDHOOD SO SPECIAL. I WILL ALWAYS REMEBER THOSE SPECIAL TIMES AT 5;30 EVERYDAY TO WATCH YOU AND THE GANG ON TV. TODAY I WILL PUT ALL MY CHILDHOOD MEMORIES AWAY.

Sad that it's because of his passing yet it's heartwarming to have the opportunity to read about this wonderful man, Lew Anderson, who I'd only known as Clarabell the Clown. It's very comforting to learn that someone who gave countless children like my brothers and me so many happy memories had such a long and fulfilling life, and such a loving family! God bless you all.

Thanks for all the wonderful entries in Lew's guest book! We will always remember and love this special man as Dad/Lew/Grandpa. It's heartwarming for our family to see how many other lives he's touched -- we appreciate your memories! My kids and I watched the final Howdy Doody episode today (again). Seeing "Clarabell" say "Good-bye, kids" now has extra special meaning for our family.

Gratefully, Margaret
