Sandra Strickland Obituary

Sandra Holder Strickland

Wilmington - Sandy Strickland, born on June 03, 1947 in Richmond, VA passed away unexpectedly on May 19, 2021. She was a few weeks shy of her 74th birthday. Sandy gifted many people with her loving and kind nature. Her smile was ever present. She was dedicated to family and friends, holding them close to her heart. She once wrote that her children gave her the best job she ever had: being a mother. While at a glance she appeared meek and mild, Sandy had a wickedly fun sense of humor and a long history of creating elaborate pranks. Her creativity in all forms - words, artwork, crafts - brought joy to countless people over the years. Beyond her family, Sandy's most noted passion, her one true love, was the color of a light blue sky. Her CAROLINA TARHEELS. A "spirited" fan, she often opted to view games at home, where there were no noise or movement restrictions!

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents R. M. and Wanda Holder; her brother Ronnie Wayne Holder, and sister Barbara Jean Hester. She is survived by her children, Wendy Moore and Hutch Strickland (wife, Alison) and her grandchildren, Sophie Strickland and Ava Moore. She is also survived by her sister, Judy Schneider (husband, Mike) of Thomasville, NC; and nephews Chris Hester (husband, Ron) of Hagerstown, MA, and Russ Britt (wife, Kalyn) of Thomasville, NC.

Sandy's absence will be felt for a long time. She lived by two rules: be kind and choose happiness every day. She exhibited grace daily. In lieu of flowers, she likely would have asked friends to consider wearing Carolina Blue on game day. Or at least, whisper "Beat Duke" under your breath.

Sweethearts we were in our early high school years. Looked forward to seeing her at our latest high school class reunion but she did not attend. Now on my quiet surfing on the Internet, I find the obituary I did not want to find. Yes, Sandy is all that others have said about her. Nothing more for me to add other than to say that is she is real angel! I will never forget you Sandy. Your ol' bo friend. Mrs Strickland was blessed with 2 loving and devoted children , Wendy and Hutch .They are truly an example of what she believed was most important in life . And they are teaching their children the same values, She will be missed but her spirit will be ever present in their lives.

I had the honor of being a neighbor of Sandy for many years . Her daughter and my daughter were best friends . Sandy was the neighborhood mother who gathered up all the kids and took them to the beach. She was the mother who made elaborate homemade Halloween costumes for her two. She made them the envy of all the kids. Sandy was the kind-hearted woman who brought me homemade soup long after moving our of our neighborhood because she heard I had shingles. She was unselfish and generous and kind in ways that matter. She listened with her heart as well as her ears. She had a natural gift of wit and she could laugh at herself and she gained strength from her ability to weather the rough times with grace and humor. She lived authentically. She spoke up when it mattered. She was the epitome of love, unconditional love. I will miss her immensely.

Congratulations to Sandy’s family for writing such a wonderful collection of memories about her. She was truly as delightful as described. I taught at Wrightsboro Elementary School for years and can truly say that the attributes described were part of our school experience. Few weeks went by without our being blessed with her creativity and sense of humor. She truly made the world a better place. I am sure you will be blessed with many memories that warm your hearts, bring smiles to your faces, and make you chuckle out loud.

Grace and peace,
Johnette Fields
